AJ Downing

AJ (Alvin Jim) Downing passed away on November 28, 2024 at the age of 94. He was born on October 31, 1930 in Benton County, Missouri, the third of seven children born to Tim and Dollie (Taylor) Downing.

Growing up during the Great Depression, AJ developed a profound appreciation for the values of hard work, resilience, and self-sufficiency. The challenges of that era shaped his character, instilling in him a steadfast determination to overcome adversity and a commitment to building a secure and independent life for himself and his loved ones.

AJ proudly served 24 years as a medic in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He retired in 1976 as a Senior Master Sergeant at Mountain Home Air Force Base. His military service deeply influenced his life, instilling a strong sense of discipline, mental toughness, and an unwavering moral compass. These qualities guided him throughout his life, enabling him to face challenges with strength and integrity and inspire those around him with his dedication to doing what was right.

While growing up in rural Missouri, AJ cultivated a lifelong love of the outdoors, which flourished during his many years exploring Idaho and Alaska. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, hiker, and cross-country skier. AJ also loved square dancing and took great pride in growing buckets full of big, beautiful tomatoes each year.

AJ is survived by his three children: Wendy Davis and her husband Kurt, Cindy Downing, and Max Downing and his wife Kristina; seven grandchildren: Timothy and his wife Thalia, Marissa and her husband Travis, Nicole and her husband Aaron, Story, Casey, Destri, and Natalie; and two great-grandchildren: Ari and Colton. He is also survived by his brother Bill Downing and his wife Karen.

A service to honor AJ's life will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise, ID 83714.
