Alvera
(Corky) Carlene Nichols, 77, of Boise, Idaho, passed away at Saint Alphonsus
Regional Medical Center March 22, 2014.
She was welcomed into heaven with her family by her side.
She
began her life’s journey September 1, 1936, born to Alma Monson, delivered by
her father, Clarence Monson in Priest River, Idaho.
She grew up in Flasher, North Dakota and
graduated from Flasher High School where she was active in music and acting
clubs, baton twirling and cheerleading.
Her
nursing career began as a nurse’s aide in high school and she later attended
Saint Alexius School of Nursing (now Mary College) where she graduated.
Her career as a registered nurse spanned 50
years starting in Nebraska with the US Public Health Service.
She
had many fond memories of fellow students in nurses training, leading her
softball team as pitcher and captain and teaching Sunday school.
Alvera
married Riley C. Nichols of Wellsville, Kansas on September 19, 1959.
In September 1960, the first of their five
daughters was born in Lawrence, Kansas.
From there, the many states she called home included Oklahoma, where she
worked for the US Public Health Service and Washington, where she was employed
by Mount Carmel Hospital.
From there she
moved to Hawaii, where she was a private duty nurse for a plantation family and
for Maui Pineapple.
She and Riley
welcomed their second daughter into the world on Maui.
Her young family next moved to Colorado,
where she was a supervisor at Boulder Memorial Hospital.
She
was employed by the VA Hospital in both Oregon and Idaho.
In Portland, she and Riley had two more
daughters and finally settled in Boise where their fifth daughter was
born.
In 1991, she returned to Hawaii
where she worked at Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu until 1994, when she
returned to Boise and eventually retired from Capital Care Center to spend many
joy filled hours with her beautiful grandchildren.
Alvera
never remarried after losing her husband in 1976.
He was the love of her life.
In
addition to her contributions as a dedicated and skilled health care professional,
she embodied grace and beauty with integrity and strength of character.
She was a strong woman, devoted mother and
difficult circumstances never held her back.
Her love of music has been instilled in her children and
grandchildren.
She
loved life and looked forward to every new day with unfaltering hope.
Her gentle, nurturing spirit made her an
incredible mother and nurse. She will be dearly m
issed
every day.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Riley; daughter, Linda; infant son,
grandson, Michael, sister, Loretta, brother, Robert and parents, Clarence &
Alma Monson.
She is survived by her
daughters and spouses, Pamela and Walter Hennig, Wendy Nichols and Andy
Evdokimo, Carlene and Sean Rocke, and Jennifer and Scott Zerwas, in addition to
her grandchildren, Lindsay, Nicholas, Ariana, Dillon, Nicole, Lawson and Hudson,
sister, Harriet Toman, brother Gary Monson along with numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
A
celebration of Alvera’s life will be conducted at 10:00am, Saturday, April 26,
2014 at King of Glory Lutheran Church,

Burial will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery.
