Ansgar E. Johnson, Jr., 83, of Boise, passed away, February 13, 2013.

Ansgar E. Johnson, Jr., was born April 6, 1929 in Boise, Idaho. He was the oldest of three siblings born to Ansgar, Sr. and Roxie Johnson. Ansgar attended schools at Roosevelt Elementary, North Junior High and Boise High School graduating in 1947. He grew up in the East end of Boise and lived there most of his life.


Ansgar married Esther Ritter of Emmett, Idaho on December 2, 1949, who was his cherished and lifetime partner for 61 years until her passing on October 16, 2010. They had four children.


Ansgar was a Boise photographer for over 50 years. He first however, worked for a photo finishing shop on South 9th St. and then for the Idaho Statesman for awhile. Ansgar was a third generation photographer in Boise being in business with his father, Ansgar Johnson, Sr. in 1950 at the age of 21. The studio was then named Johnson & Son. They had a studio in the old Sonna Bldg. until an unfortunate fire destroyed the studio on September 9, 1951. The Sonna Bldg. burned to the ground. He and his father then had a studio on 721 Main St. where the US Bank Bldg. is today. Ansgar, Sr. soon retired and Ansgar, Jr. took over the business for many years until urban renewal of downtown Boise. He then moved his studio to his home for a few years. He also then worked for Idaho Camera for 2 years. He then had a studio, Ansgar's, on Shoreline Drive in Boise for many years.


Ansgar was a very respected photographer and covered many weddings in Boise, including portraits, landscapes, commercial and business photography. He had many respected customers. Included in his work as a photographer were many voluntary contributions which were Music Week, United Way, The Junior Chamber of Commerce and Boise Jaycee's. He was Fundsy Photographer from 1967 to 2002. Ansgar also spent many enjoyable years being photographer for the Boise Little Theatre and El Korah Shrine. Ansgar also was photographer at a Governor's Inaugural Ball or two.


Ansgar was an El Korah Shriner for over 50 years. He was a 32nd degree Master Mason. He sponsored many young children at the Shriner's Hospital. He played clarinet in the Shrine Band for many years. Ansgar was Photographer Emeritus. He photographed many a Potentate's Ball and portrait of all the Potentates and many other events.


Ansgar was born to Ansgar Sr. and Roxie McMillan Johnson. Ansgar's grandfather was Thomas McMillan who was owner of the Idanha Hotel along with his brother, John McMillan. He spent many cherished times at the Idanha Hotel as a young boy and young man. He loved his grandparents, Thomas and Roxie McMillan and loved spending time with them. Ansgar's children have memories of watching Dad in the Shrine Band in parades from the Idanha Hotel.


Ansgar became a pilot at the age of 14. He loved reminiscing in his later years about all his flying experiences which were very many and they were quite a good story. He loved all the people that he had experiences with flying.


As a young boy and young man with Esther and the children, he spent many cherished days in the summer at the family cabin at Windy Point in McCall, Idaho. He loved to water ski on the Payette Lake. He also loved walking to Deadhorse Creek with his father every morning. In later years he enjoyed boating at Lucky Peak Reservoir in the family boat, Roxie Ann.


Ansgar also enjoyed camping with family and friends for many years at Johnson Creek and Yellow Pine. There were many good times on all the camping trips and many wonderful memories.


Ansgar was a hunter and only hunted for birds. He had a group of friends that went pheasant hunting every year on a ranch up in Midvale.


Ansgar sponsored a little league baseball team with his son, Ansgar, III. He enjoyed many days participating and watching the games.


Ansgar had many good friends and acquaintances over the years. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to someone or lend a caring ear. He was a very compassionate, caring and humorous person. He loved everyone and was much loved by many friends and family members. He will be missed terribly.


Ansgar had many employees who dearly loved him. One employee and friend mentioned that it was her best working experience working with Dad and grandpa.


Ansgar also dearly loved his friends he met every Thursday for lunch that he also had gone to high school with.


Ansgar was also a CB'er and for years loved the many people he had met.


Ansgar was truly the most wonderful father to his children. He always had to know what his children were doing and how they were doing. There were many a phone call. He cared deeply about his children and his children loved him so very much. He was a very special father.


Ansgar was wonderful husband to Esther. Esther and Ansgar were very close. He dearly loved Esther and missed her terribly after her passing.


Ansgar loved his brothers Peter and Mac and his parents, Ansgar, Sr. and Roxie. He was always checking on them to see how they were doing.


Dad was an animal lover. He had cats and birds and several dogs that he truly loved. He would take the dogs walking in the foothills or on the greenbelt about everyday.


Ansgar is survived by his children, Ansgar Johnson, III and grandson, Shawn of Hagerman, Idaho, Dwight Johnson and his wife, Brenda of Boise and Patricia Welsh Johnson of Boise.


Ansgar was preceded in death by his wife, Esther and his eldest child, Suzanne Johnson, and also by his parents, Ansgar and Roxie Johnson.

Funeral services will be conducted by Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 22, 2013 at 2:30 p.m.


Memorials are suggested to the Shriner's Children's Hospital and to the Idaho Humane Society or the charity of you choice.
