Barbara, 87, of Boise passed
away on August 15, 2015 of unexpected heart issues. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 am
Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 811 S. Latah. Rev. Rob Cook will officiate.
Barbara was born in Ontario,
Oregon on July 7, 1928 to James and Jean Murphy. She was raised on a large cattle ranch near
Juntura, Oregon. Starting at age five,
she rode a saddle horse five miles each way to a one room school house from
grades one through eight. She boarded
with families while she attended high school in Ontario, Oregon and graduated
from high school at age 16.
After high school, Barbara
moved to Kennewick, Washington to begin a career as a secretary at INEL. Later she moved to Boise and worked at
Graybar Electric and IFECO and joined the Cabrini Club. She married Nick Bassick on April 6,
1955. They had two sons and a
daughter. While raising a family, she
was personal secretary to Governors Andrus and Evans, and went on to work at
the Idaho State Legislature, Idaho Water Resources and finally retired from the
Idaho State Insurance Fund.
In 1961, Nick and Barbara
purchased a house within walking distance of Sacred Heart Church and
School. They lived in that house for 46
years and sent their kids to Sacred Heart grade school and Bishop Kelly High
School. They hosted pre-game dinners for
Bishop Kelly football players and their home was a favorite place for the
grandkids to spend their weekends. Eight
years ago Barbara fulfilled a lifetime dream of building a new house which has
been the gathering place for the family events and holidays. She was an avid BSU football fan and
purchased a big screen TV to watch their games and proudly displayed the BSU
flag.
Barbara’s church activities
included SHARPS, Dayliters, Alter Society, Perpetual Adoration and various
prayer groups. She collected rosaries
from numerous international tours with her church including Spain, France,
England, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Israel, Wales, Croatia, Bosnia,
Norway, Sweden, Scotland and Canada. She
also traveled extensively throughout the United States including Alaska and
Hawaii.
Twice, Barbara survived
breast cancer ten years apart. She
attributed her strength in this battle to her strong Irish spirit.
Barbara was very kind and
gentle and was loved by all. She was a
great care taker of family and friends.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting and various other
crafts and won many ribbons at the Idaho State Fair. She enjoyed giving handmade items to others
and making items for the church bazaar.
She is preceded in death by
her husband Nicholas, parents James and Jean Murphy, brothers Dan and Jim and
sister Pat. She is survived by her
brother Tom (Francis) Murphy of Ontario, OR and her sister Beverly (Jack)
Blevins, sons Phil (Carmen) and Paul, daughter Brenda, grandsons Nick, Andy
(Leah), granddaughter Jessica, great grandchildren Caelin, Nicole, Ava and Lola
all of Boise and many loved nieces and nephews.
