Benjamin (Ben) Sokel, 94, passed away November 10

with his wife Ruth by his side

Ben was born October 13, 1917 in New York City
.
His
parents Hiram and Tilly Sokel had emigrated from Russia
.
He
was educated in the New York City public schools
.
While
working for the Army Corps of Engineers he met Ruth while she was in nurses
training at Mt
.
Sinai Hospital.
Ruth and Ben were married January 6
,
1946
in Boise. After they returned to Boise in 1950, Ben worked as a warehouseman
for Crane Plumbing Supply. He also worked in the Men's Department at Falk's
Idaho Department Store for a number of years. He managed Jay
'
s
Pawn Shop for 40 years.
Ben was an avid reader and he loved the Sunday morning TV news
shows
.
His passion was baseball and the New York Yankees
.
Ben
had a talent for coaching. The neighborhood kids always wanted Ben to play
.
His
grandson, Matthew Dallas was the chief beneficiary of those talents. He had a
bat and mitt in his hand as soon as he could stand by himself
.
Ben is survived by his wife
,
Ruth;
their son Ralph and his wife Carol of Austin
,
TX,
and daughter
,
Joyce Dallas and her husband Tom of Boise; and grandchildren
Rebecca Kidd (John)
,
Benjamin and Andrea Sokel
;
Erica
Goodnight (Jeremiah) and Matthew Dallas.
There will be a public viewing from 6-8pm, Monday, November
14
at Alden

Funeral Chapel in Boise. Graveside services, officiated by Rabbi Daniel Fink
will be at
11am
,
Tuesday, November 15 at Dry Creek Cemetery, with an open house
from 3-6 pm.
