Dr. Bernard Strouth, 89, of Boise, passed away on Sunday, May 01, 2011, at his home, due to complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Bernard was born on Nov. 7, 1921, in Faribault, MN to Michael Strouth and his wife, Clara Eschweiler. He attended school at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault, and then St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, before graduating from the Univ. of Minnesota, with his degree in medicine. Bernard served his country as a battalion surgeon with the U.S. Army, in the 10th Mountain Division in Colorado and Wyoming. On Oct. 25, 1947, Dr. Strouth married Mary Kathryn Dolan in Boulder, Colorado. Their marriage was blessed with a son and a daughter. In 1949, he established a practice with Dr. John Edwards in Council, Idaho. Dr. Strouth also worked in Council with the American Cancer Society, helping to find people who had contracted low-grade polio after being vaccinated with the early Salk vaccine. In 1958 Dr. Strouth moved to Boise, where he continued as a Family Practice Physician. He served locally at Saint Alphonsus and Saint Luke’s hospital staffs, and was a Past Chief of Staff of St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. In 1984, he was published in the Idaho Statesman as a “Portrait of a Distinguished Citizen”. He was a part of St. Mark’s Catholic Community, and was also a past president of the Catholic Physicians Guild of Idaho. He served as a team physician for Bishop Kelly High School. He was also a member of the Journal Club in Boise. Bernard married Barbara Nollmann, on Oct. 21, 2006. Dr. Strouth loved gardening and was a Boise State fan.
Dr. Strouth is survived by his wife Barbara; a son, Bernard Francis Strouth, of Worthington, MN; a daughter, Susan Strouth, of Boise; a sister, Sr. Clarus (Laura) Strouth of Rochester, MN, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Kathryn Strouth; brother, Ralph Strouth; brother, Vincent Strouth; sister, Marion Rose; and brother, Joe Strouth.
Memorials may be made in Dr. Strouth’s name to either Palliative Care or Nursing Scholarship Fund through St. Alphonsus Hospital, or to the American Red Cross-Tornado Relief Fund.
A vigil service will be held on Wednesday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 5, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Boise, followed by a graveside committal at Cloverdale Cemetery.
