Bernice Heisner Gray

Bernice Heisner Gray, 91, of Boise, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013 in a local hospital.  A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at Morris Hill Cemetery.

Bernice was born August 20, 1921 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Paul and Sylvia Lynch Heisner.  When she was four, the family came to Boise on a train with the opening of the new depot.  She received her education in Boise, attending Washington School for the first and second grades, where she met her future husband Jim.  Bernice graduated from Boise High School in 1939 and Boise Junior College in 1941.  Prior to marriage Bernice worked for the Idaho Statesman and Idaho Power.

Bernice married James Robert Gray at St. John’s Cathedral on December 1, 1945.  They resided in Logan, Utah, Bozeman, Montana and Las Cruces, New Mexico. For many years James was a professor at New Mexico State University, until 1984 when retirement brought them back to Boise.  Many enjoyable times were spent at their Salmon River cabin and skiing at Bogus Basin with many old and new Primetimer friends.  Bernice liked to knit, sew, antique and shop.  An avid football fan, she supported both New Mexico State and Boise State University football teams.  She had a special interest in local theater and music.  Bernice will be buried next to her beloved husband James who died in 1997.

She is survived by her son James R. Gray Jr.; daughter Catherine Gray Penland of Woodland Park CO; grandchildren, Caren Penland, Joseph Penland, and Cherie Smith of Texas, Matthew Garth Gray (Esther), Boise; great-grandchildren Darius and Aralia of Boise; sisters-in-law Janet and Virginia Gray; and one sister, Marcene Christoverson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Gray and two sisters, Emmajane Palmer and Norma Worthen.
