Bernice
Heisner Gray, 91, of Boise, passed away Monday, March 4, 2013 in a local
hospital. A graveside service will be
held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 8, at Morris Hill Cemetery.
Bernice
was born August 20, 1921 in Nebraska City, Nebraska to Paul and Sylvia Lynch
Heisner. When she was four, the family
came to Boise on a train with the opening of the new depot. She received her education in Boise,
attending Washington School for the first and second grades, where she met her
future husband Jim. Bernice graduated
from Boise High School in 1939 and Boise Junior College in 1941. Prior to marriage Bernice worked for the
Idaho Statesman and Idaho Power.
Bernice
married James Robert Gray at St. John’s Cathedral on December 1, 1945. They resided in Logan, Utah, Bozeman, Montana
and Las Cruces, New Mexico. For many years James was a professor at New Mexico
State University, until 1984 when retirement brought them back to Boise. Many enjoyable times were spent at their
Salmon River cabin and skiing at Bogus Basin with many old and new Primetimer
friends. Bernice liked to knit, sew,
antique and shop. An avid football fan,
she supported both New Mexico State and Boise State University football teams. She had a special interest in local theater
and music. Bernice will be buried next
to her beloved husband James who died in 1997.
She is
survived by her son James R. Gray Jr.; daughter Catherine Gray Penland of
Woodland Park CO; grandchildren, Caren Penland, Joseph Penland, and Cherie
Smith of Texas, Matthew Garth Gray (Esther), Boise; great-grandchildren Darius
and Aralia of Boise; sisters-in-law Janet and Virginia Gray; and one sister,
Marcene Christoverson.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Gray and two sisters,
Emmajane Palmer and Norma Worthen.
In
lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to a favorite charity.
