Betty was born
July 21, 1932, in Boise, Idaho to Ivan Nisson and Lola B. (Corn) Nisson, who
were later divorced. She spent her early years in Boise surrounded by aunts,
uncles, and cousins.
With the
outbreak of World War II, Betty moved with her mother, aunt, and uncle to Bonneville,
OR in order for them to work in the shipyard. As a single parent, Lola found it
was in her five year old daughter’s best interest, to live with Lola’s sister,
Agnes and husband Roy White, while Lola stayed in the shipyard to help with the
war effort. Aunt Agnes and Uncle Roy
then moved to Vancouver, WA to work.
Uncle Roy contracted rheumatoid arthritis and they were forced to return
to Idaho. Aunt Agnes and Uncle Roy, and Betty
moved to a ranch at Pine Creek with his parents. Betty attended school in a one room school
house on Grimes Creek. She moved to
Boise and lived with her Grandma Corn.
She attended Garfield, North Junior High, and Boise High School.
Aunt Agnes and
Uncle Roy built a house in Boise and moved the family back in 1947. Betty
attended Boise High School, graduating in 1950. She had planned to attend Idaho
State University to become a pharmacist, but a funny thing happened; she met
the love of her life Jack Leroy Fleshman. They were married September 22, 1950
in Boise at the Church of God on Broadway.
They were
blessed with four children: Dorothy Ann, Donald Leroy, Cheryle Lynn, and Darryl
Gene.
She was employed
by First Security Bank as a manager of Timeway, retiring in 1983. Not only was
Betty a fixture at Boise First Community Center since the early 1980s, she was
also the Children’s Director.
Betty had many
interests. She began each day with a morning devotional and a cup of coffee.
She enjoyed camping, crocheting, knitting, traveling with friends and family,
reading, Sudoku, shopping with her daughter Cheryle at Dillard’s and Macy’s,
and attending any activity involving her grand children and great grand
children.
She is survived
her husband of 62 years Jack Fleshman, children Dorothy Ann (Richard) Beaver,
Cheryle Lynn Fleshman, Darryl Gene Fleshman, and by eight grandchildren: Shad
Michael Fleshman-Cooper, Laura Ann (Beaver) Elias, Antoinette Marie (Beaver)
McKnight (Jake), Nicole Elisabeth (Cooper) Wayne (Colby), Christopher Michael
Fleshman, Marisa Marie (Cooper) Kundy (Kasey), Karen Agnes (Beaver) Zimmerman
(Eric), and Jordan Nicholas Cooper. She also had eight great-grandchildren,
Isaac, Ian, Mikayla, Gavin, Adysenne, Elias, Kellen, and Brody. She recently
became a great-great-grandmother to Kayl Rae Fleshman-Cooper. Her beloved pet,
Sir Paddington Bear of York, aka Paddy, also survives her.
A special place
was held in her heart for her “adopted family members” Nick and Karen Cooper,
the Jonathan Vance family, Mandy Brockett Fleshman, Marc Foote, and the Shane
Six family.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, infant brother, son Donald, granddaughter Angela, and
numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Betty’s memorial
service will be held on Saturday, June 29th at 2pm at Boise First Community
Center. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to your favorite
charity.
