Blanche Holland Young, 96
Former Tennessee resident living almost 60 years in Madison,
Blanche H.
Young
died peacefully at 96 years of age, died Sunday, March 30,
2014, where she resided at Marquis-Shaw in Boise, Idaho.
She previously lived for 8 years at Regency
Columbia Village in East Boise.
Blanche Holland Young was born in Haywood County, Stanton,
Tennessee on December 14, 1917 to James Mercer Holland, Sr. and Annie Sue
Hobbs.
Blanche enjoyed playing
basketball and taking Chemistry and French in school and carried around a
pencil and pad sketching when she was not sewing or designing her own clothes.
After graduation in 1936 from Haywood County High School in
Brownsville, TN, Blanche lived in Memphis where she worked for a local cotton
company at the Peabody Hotel and attended the Public School of Art.
She later moved to Nashville where she met
her future husband, Robert “Bob” Hampton Young Sr. and was married in January
of 1944 at McKendree Methodist Church.
Bob and Blanche raised three children in Madison: Bobby,
Susan and Mary Ann.
Blanche was a
homemaker for almost twenty years, involved in PTA, Room Mothers, and other
school activities at Amqui Elementary and Madison High School.
She worked for a time for the Chamber of
Commerce.
In 1963, Blanche took a nursing assistant job at Madison
Hospital (later Tennessee Christian) and became a Ward Clerk after completing
Medical Terminology at UT Nashville.
She
retired with 18 years of service there and several years of part-time work at
Dillard’s in Rivergate Mall.
Husband Bob
died in 1966 after a short illness of Congestive Heart Failure.
Blanche dedicated her life to serving Jesus Christ and
attended both Methodist and Baptist Churches in Madison.
In her early years she attended Matthews
Memorial Methodist, at Madison Southern Methodist, she was one of five families
involved in the church’s beginnings and acted as treasurer and SS curriculum
purchaser.
She was involved in various
Bible Classes at Parkway Baptist, Metro Baptist and Neely’s Bend Baptist.
Surviving members of the family are Susan Young of
Nashville, TN, Mary Ann Young Robinson and Larry Robinson of Boise, ID;
grandson, Robert Reed Young of Memphis, TN; granddaughters, Jolie Kemp Grout
and Damien Grout of Alpine, TX, Jaclyn Kemp Glanzman and Jon Glanzman of
Homedale, ID, Molly Kemp Kiesig and Alex Kiesig of Boise, ID; daughter-in-law,
Connie Callis Young of Gallatin, TN.
Also beloved Great-Grandchildren Hailey, Hatty and JJ Glanzman who
visited with her only two days before her death, and two first cousins, Rowena
Bedford Houston of Mountain Home, Arkansas and Dorothy Bedford Cranfill of
Virginia Beach, VA, and sister-in-law, Sonia Young Thompson and E.D. Thompson
and family of Nashville, TN.
Oldest son,
“Bobby” Robert Hampton Young, Jr. passed on June 9, 2008 preceding his mother
in death.
Services for Blanche were held at Alden-Waggoner Funeral
Home on April 4 with words from Brian Douglas, Terry Little, Jim McFarland and
with music by Susie Watkins. Burial at Morris-Hill Cemetery preceded the
service at Morris-Hill Cemetery.
