1939-2014
Bonnie Kay, of Boise, ID, passed away on June 9, 2014 in Meridian,
ID at the age of seventy-five.
Bonnie Kay Nimmo was born in Sterling, CO on May 8, 1939
to Robert T. and Geraldine Nimmo. She is the oldest of four children and
resided in Haxtun, CO, Casper, WY and Rawlins, WY as a child.
Bonnie graduated from Rawlins High School in Rawlins WY
in 1957. She attended the University of
Wyoming and belonged to Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Bonnie graduated from the College of Education
with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1960.
After graduation, Bonnie began her teaching career at Lincoln Elementary
in Laramie, WY teaching Kindergarten.
She also taught third and fourth grade at Thayer Elementary. The United
States Junior Chamber of Commerce presented Bonnie with the Outstanding Young
Educator Award in January, 1968. She is
a past Worthy Matron of Alpha Chapter Number 1, Order of the Eastern Star and
Past Guardian of Job’s Daughters, Bethel 44.
Bonnie, her husband Larry Gray and her two children moved
to Boise, ID in 1978. She was employed
at Elmer’s Restaurant for a number of years as a hostess and manager before
returning to her love of teaching in 1985.
Bonnie was teaching at It’s a Small World when the owner recognized her
potential in leadership and made her the manager of the school and shortly thereafter she became the General
Manager of the franchise’s five schools in Boise. When the franchise sold, Bonnie went back to
teaching Kindergarten for five years at New Horizons in Meridian, ID. In 1998, Bonnie began teaching at WICAP Head
Start in Nampa, ID where she was named 2010 Idaho WICAP Head Start teacher of
the year. Bonnie retired from WICAP after
fifteen years in October, 2013. Throughout
her career, Bonnie continued her own education at the University of Wyoming and
BSU. Her dedication to children’s
education spanned over fifty years.
Bonnie had a vivacious, outgoing personality. She loved
to laugh, was generous in spirit and always willing to help others. Bonnie loved animals and over the years she
brought home many abused dogs whom she lovingly called her “babies”. She was a member of the Assembly of God
Church in Boise. She was a student of
the Bible and continued with her studies until the end of her life. Bonnie was a shining star whose light will be
missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her son, Gene Ammerman and future
daughter-in-law, Angela Mortensen of Boise, ID, daughter and son-in-law, Teri
and Mike Brito of Cheyenne, WY, her granddaughters, who affectingly called her
“Grandma Wabbit,” Elise, Erica and Brittany Brito of Cheyenne, WY, her mother
Geraldine Cunningham of Fort Collins, CO and her three siblings Charlotte
Rhoadamer of Yukon, OK, Russell Wolz of N. Chesterfield, VA, and Betsy Gow of
Aurora, CO. She is preceded in death by
her father, Robert T. Nimmo and her husband Larry Gray.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014
at 3:00 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel located at 5400 Fairview Ave. A viewing will be held prior to the service
from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
A reception in Bonnie’s honor will be held in Laramie, WY
in August.
