Burton C. Millar died on April 27, 2013 at the age of 90
years old.
Burton Currie Millar
was born on December 29, 1922 to Mabel (Paton) Millar and James Millar on a
farm west of Neche, ND. He attended grade
school at Hyde Park rural school and one year of high school in Neche, ND. He
obtained his GED after he had settled in Boise. At a young age he demonstrated his creative
mind and wood working skills by constructing toys out of peach crates. His love of woodworking and the talent he
possessed was evident throughout his life.
In February of 1941 he chose to enlist in US Marine
Corp. After basic training in San Diego,
CA, he was assigned guard duty at the Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton,
WA. In April of 1942, he was promoted to
Corporal. In January of 1943, after
receiving advanced weapons training, he was promoted to Sergeant and
transferred to New Zealand. He served in
combat on Bougainville, Guam, and Iwojima.
On January 26, 1945, Burton was seriously wounded in combat on
Iwojima. On October 12, 1945, he was
Honorable Discharged and ended his military service at the rank of PLT SGT.
Burt relocated to Boise, ID and began a lengthy career in the
service department of Sears. On November
7, 1947, Burt and Shirley Vestal were married.
Burt and Shirley spent their life together living in the house Burt
built at 1014 Ridenbaugh St. They
enjoyed dancing and traveling together.
Burt also enjoyed woodworking, yard work, gardening, and playing
cards. Burt was a member of the American
Legion and a very active member of the Elks Lodge #310 for 55 years.
Sadly, Shirley past away on July 16, 1990 and Burt continued
on alone.
In November of 2010, Burt moved into Willow Park; an assisted
living community in Boise.
Burt is survived by his older brother Walter (Eileen) Millar,
Cavalier, ND. Nephews: Glen Millar,
Walhalla, ND, Allen Millar, Topeka, KS, and Wayne (Dianne) Millar, Wahpeton,
ND. Niece: Carol Millar, White Bear
Township, MN. First cousins: Alison
(Millar) Olson, Gimli, Manitoba. Iva Mae
(Paton) Clisby, Long Beach, CA. Special
friend: Ms. Betty Floyd, Boise.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May
2, at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise.
