A fine man has left behind the cares of this world and a worthy
legacy to his family. Charlie passed away peacefully in his home on April 15,
2013.
He was a father to three sons, Mike (Ruth), Bryce (Sandy) and Charlie
(Betty) and a stepfather to four, Peggy (Mike), Steve (Sue), Linda and Keith.
He was a good example of service and dedication to all that knew him. He lost
the wife of his youth, Marie, in his early 30's. He later married Juanita
(Nita) his loving wife; they had been married 40 years. He is also survived by
his two sisters, Gaydena Thompson and husband Ken, and Karen Nelson and husband
David. He was a wonderful uncle as well, keeping track and in touch with many
nieces and nephews that all loved him. He had 22 Grandchildren and 14 Great
Grandchildren.
He loved music and was a member of the Idaho National Guard Band
for some 40 years. After retiring from the Guard as a Master Sergeant he
continued to play in 3 other bands, The Caldwell Centennial Band, The Shiners
band and the Hillview Methodist church band holding
regular practices and concerts. He blessed many with his
talents and love of music. He was a regular at the Jazz festival in Sun Valley.
He was a professional educator, teaching in Richfield, Idaho, then
in Wilder, ID, where he also became the principal. He was superintendent of
schools in Grandview-Bruneau and the Owyhee Indian Reservation, ID. He
worked for the State Department of education to finish his long and distinguished
career in education. His proudest accomplishment was getting the free lunch
program started for under privileged children. He also ran for State
Superintendent of Idaho in the 70’s.
In retirement, besides his music he was actively involved in the
Boise Vista Lion's Club for over 40 years where he received numerous awards for
Lion of the Year. He led their charity casino nights and participated in
all aspects of the club's service to the community. He served as a state
representative for REAI, the Retired educators association of Idaho. He also
served as a representative for the AARP in Idaho and received the 2010 Andrus
Award for community service. One of the highest honors given by AARP. He
received the Melvin Jones Fellow award as well as the Seven seals award as the
state ombudsman for ESGR. He faithfully served the Phi Delta Kappa and was
awarded with a plaque for 45 years of service. He was involved in his Church as
well, participating in musical events and other activities as his
time allowed. He enjoyed playing golf with his sons and fellow retirees on a regular
basis.
Charlie was not a man of many words but he knew all too well that
his actions spoke volumes. He was truly a servant to many and did not know what
the word retirement meant. In the 18 years of his retirement he was more
involved and busier than he had ever been. He will be greatly missed in many
ways. He was ready for the rest that he now has in the arms of his Savior Jesus
Christ.
