On February 15, 2017 at 5:45pm, after a short battle with colon cancer, Cheryl stepped across the threshold from earth to heaven and went to be with her Lord and savior. She was greatly loved by her family and many friends, and will be missed immensely.
Cheryl was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on February 28, 1952, the first born to Carl and Vesta Spriggs. She was followed by five other siblings. The family lived in Smith Hill, Ohio in a rural area of Southern Ohio. Life was simple and filled with walks in the woods, berry picking, chores and tending the large garden. She attended elementary school at Elm Grove School in Elm Grove, Ohio and high school at Piketon H.S. graduating in 1970.
After graduation, she moved to the big city of Columbus, Ohio and worked for Borden Company and later for Crawford & Co. It was at Crawford & Co. where she met Tom Heffner, her future husband. Cheryl and Tom were married in June 1973 and shortly thereafter moved to Phoenix, Az. on their first of many adventures together. Cheryl found employment with Motorola and Tom began a career with Graybar Electric Co. Cheryl’s working career was suspended by the birth of a son, David, in September 1974. Another son, Brett, was born in October 1975. With two young boys at home, Cheryl became a stay at home mom and did not work outside the home until the early 1990s.
The next twenty-three years she worked at various positions including church secretary and office manager for a law firm. In the mid 1990s she went back to school at Boise State University to earn a Legal Secretary Certificate. In 1999, she was a legal secretary at Stoel Rives, and then in 2003 held a similar position at Holland & Hart until her retirement at the end of 2012.
She didn’t have to spend much time contemplating what she would do in retirement. In June of 2013, son David and wife Jaime had twins, Jase and Hazel. Life got a lot more exciting for Grandma. Cheryl was involved in their care from birth until October 2016 when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. She loved the twins with all her heart and was heartbroken that she wouldn’t get to see them grow up, get married and start their own families. The relationship she enjoyed with Jase and Hazel meant the world to her.
In the early 1970s, Cheryl accepted Jesus as her savior. She had an abundance of grace and peace because of her relationship with the Lord. It was never more evident than when she became ill. She lived the last days, one day at a time, and never lost the joy and peace of knowing her heavenly destination.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Tom; sons David Heffner (Jaime) of Boise, and Brett Heffner, of Las Vegas; grandchildren Jase and Hazel; mother Vesta Spriggs; brothers Keith Spriggs (Brenda), Jeff Spriggs (Faye); sisters Pam Cooley, Carla Cox (Frosty), Darla Cooper (Harold) all of Ohio. Cheryl was preceded in death by her father Carl Spriggs.
Our family would like to thank her extended family and friends for the outpouring of love, prayers and support. Thanks also to Saint Alphonsus Hospital and Cancer Center for the professional and compassionate care she received. Special thanks to Harrison’s Hope hospice for the wonderful care received in her final weeks.
A memorial service for Cheryl will be conducted at 11:00am on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Calvary Chapel Boise, 123 So. Auto Drive, Boise, Idaho 8370. A private committal service will be held at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery later in the day.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
