Clifford Eugene Hobson, age 92, died October 9, 2014, in
his home in Boise, after “a valiant struggle with old age.” Cliff, known to many as Gene, was born in
Buhl, Idaho, on July 16, 1922 to Chester and Sarah (Bristow) Hobson.
Cliff and his brothers spent their younger years on a
dairy farm in Buhl and he graduated from Buhl High School in 1940. In that same
year, Buhl Methodist Church received a new pastor, and young Cliff fell in love
with Nora Mae Hannan, the pastor’s daughter.
Cliff left Buhl to move to Seattle to work for Boeing and
then in the shipyards. Nora moved to Seattle and married Cliff in May of 1942,
with Pastor Cecil Hannan officiating.
In 1944, Cliff was drafted into the US Army and
was sent to France with the 45
th
Infantry Division under General
Patton. His unit received a Presidential Citation after the battle of Aschaffenburg. Later, his division
participated in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich,
Germany. In 2009, Cliff was awarded a Proclamation from the Idaho Governor’s
office for this action. He returned from Europe and was discharged in May of
1946.
Clifford
and his growing family moved to Payette, ID, where Cliff worked for a sheet
metal company, until he moved to Boise to work as the foreman for Wasler Sheet
Metal. On Labor Day of 1960, he and his brother Dale founded the business which
became Hobson Fabricating Company. When Cliff retired, he and Dale sold the
business, but it remains Hobson Fabricating to this day.
During his lifetime, Cliff and Nora enjoyed many
activities such as water and snow skiing, motorcycling, ballroom dancing, RVing
and serving the community through the Assistance League, Elks Club, Sounds of
Music, church work at Whitney Methodist, and PTA. Traveling with Nora and
friends formed a large part of Cliff’s later years.
Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, one
brother, one sister and his beloved Nora. He is survived by brothers Dale and
Don; sons David (Bobbie), Robert, and Richard; grandchildren Shelley, Jeff
(Liz) Brian (Cathleen), Dylan (Nancy), and Kelsey; and great-grandchildren
Spencer, Lindsey, Zach, Cedar, Benjamin, Hannah, Caelan, Max, Colter, and
Logan.
A Celebration of Cliff’s Life will be held Sunday,
