Colonel Burl Eugene Coursey 1928-2013


Burl Eugene Coursey of Boise passed away on January 4 , 2013. Burl was born September 5 th , 1928 in Webb , Oklahoma to Erma and Elzie Roy Coursey. After spending his youth in Oklahoma, Burl joined the Air Force and began his military career in 1949 as an Aviation Cadet in Texas. His early career included multiple assignments as a flight instructor. Following an assignment in Japan in the mid 1950's , Burl served as Operations Officer at several Air Force installations. His later career included assignments as Senior Air Force Advisor to multiple Air National Guard squadrons in Washington, Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. During this time , he also was deployed to Vietnam in 1967 flying RF4Cs. Burl Coursey flew 57 missions in North Vietnam and 77 missions in South Vietnam.

Burl Coursey ' s many military decorations , awards and achievements include the Silver Star for gallantry and devotion to duty , the Distinguished Flying Cross , Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters , Presidential Unit Citation , and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Burl Coursey retired from the Air Force in 1978 as a fighter pilot with over 7000 hours flying time.

Burl retired in Payette and eventually relocated to Boise where he has lived for the past 27 years. Burl ' s hobbies and passions included hunting and fishing. For some time, he owned a second home in Anchor Point , Alaska where he and Betty would spend some time each summer fishing for halibut and salmon in Katchemak Bay. Burl loved attending high school and family reunions. He and Betty also traveled across the country to Air Force reunions and ceremonies. Burl was extremely proud of both his Air Force career and his family.

Burl is survived by his wife, Betty , his son, Chris and his wife, Christina and his daughter, Dru Miller and her husband, James; 2 stepchildren, David Rieb and Jennifer Rieb; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren ; brothers, Roger and Cecil; and sister, Carol.

There will be a viewing and the family will greet friends at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, Jan. 9 th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 9 : 30 a.m. on Thursday, January 10 th , 2013 at Ustick Baptist Church, 14301 W. McMillan Rd. in Boise . A committal service with full militar y honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery , 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd , Boise.
