Darwin Elmer Edwards was born to Ruby Claggett and Elmer Edwards on December 23, 1923, in Wood County, Milton Township, Ohio. He was the fourth child of seven.
During World War II, he enlisted in the tank division of the US Army.
He loved to tell of his sleeping in the general's bed. One snowy night in Germany, he was chosen for guard duty at the general's castle. Thinking that he had enough time to change his wet clothing before the general arrived, he went inside the castle. He lay down for a short nap but never awoke until the next morning. Luckily, the general did not arrive until the next day.
On his way to the front lines of the Battle of the Bulge, victory was declared. After the war, he returned home and resumed farming.
On December 27, 1947, Darwin and Elsie Miriam Steinmiller were married in Bowling Green, Ohio. Darwin became a grain farmer. He and Miriam began attending a country church and gave their hearts to the Lord. They often entertained visiting missionaries in their home and became supporters of missionaries around the world. In 1966, he sold the farm and moved to Hobe Sound, Florida, to place their children in a Christian school. Darwin worked for Grumman Aircraft; later he became a salesman of lumber and kitchen cabinets. Darwin retired; and he and Miriam moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In 2009, they moved to Boise, Idaho. They faithfully attended the Boise Bible Missionary Church.
On August 27, 2011, Darwin (87) went to his heavenly home from the home of his caregiver Sherri Arey. He is survived by his wife Miriam, and his children Darlene Edwards, of Kaohsiung, Taiwan; Muriel Mandile of Lake Placid, Florida; David Edwards and Jonathan and Norma Edwards of Las Vegas, Nevada; one grandson Jonathan Edwards of Las Vegas, Nevada; and one sister Rosalyn Anderson of Bowling Green, Ohio. He was preceded in death by five of his siblings.
