Donald Joseph
Mendiola, known for his boyish grin, kind heart and love of family, was born to
Louis and Jean Mendiola, August 6, 1935 in Boise, Idaho.
Don graduated from Boise High School in 1953, where he was known for his
defensive moves on the football field. His boyish grin caught the eye of
Shirley Bate, and they were married December 30, 1956. They were blessed with
two children Don Jr. and Bridget.
Don worked for the family business, M & W Markets, started by his father
and Fred Wisnor. Then in 1968 Don and Shirley started their own family business
when the purchased Johnny Horn Flowers, which later was renamed Mendiola’s
Flowers. For 18 years Don was known as a good business man and employer as he
served the Boise community with outstanding floral designs, with wife Shirley
by his side. They sold Mendiola’s Flowers in 1986, and after a brief
retirement, Don went to work at Ace Machine Shop.
When Don was not working, he enjoyed being with friends. Don and Shirley were
members of Hillcrest Country Club where Don shined on the Hillcrest Bowling
League, and would also give it his best shot on the golf course.
While growing up, Stanley, Idaho was a special place for the Louis and Jean
Mendiola clan. Don loved to spend time at the family cabin, teaching the kids
how to build fences and cut fire wood, and when the work was done it was time
to go fishing or take the jeep across the mountain tops.
But most of all, Don was a family man, who will be remembered for his love and
dedication to his wife and children. A reflection of his love for Jesus Christ
that shined through his actions everyday.
For the last ten years Don considered it a
pleasure and a joy to lovingly care for Shirley, his beloved wife of almost 59
years.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Jean Mendiola, brother
Louis Mendiola, and sister Mary Ann Morgan. He is survived by his wife Shirley
Mendiola, son Donald Mendiola Jr, (Wendi), daughter Bridget Mendiola,
grandchildren Christine and Dallas Mendiola and sister Florence Pierce.
The family would like to thank those that helped care for Don in his final
days. Heather, Angelia, Kurstin, Jennifer, MaryAnn and Juliann your care for
Don was tender, sweet and with great care for maintaining his dignity. Thank
You.
