She passed peacefully into her heavenly fathers arms Saturday June 11, 2011, after suffering a series of strokes beginning in April. A memorial service will be held at the Mountain View Church of the Brethren, Boise Idaho at 11:00am, Saturday, June 18, 2011 followed by a graveside service in Nez-Perce, Idaho, Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11:00am. Arrangements are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise.
Doris was born on January 30 1925 to Ralph and Cynthia (Hoover) Thomas on the family farm south of town. She was the youngest of 3 children. She grew up in Nezperce, Idaho where she completed high school and went straight to work as a secretary for the Lewis County Auditor for 13 years. She was elected County Auditor in 1950 and served until her retirement in 1985. She married Herb Brown in 1955, and they became parents of son Thomas Brown, 1956, and Daniel Brown, 1965. During this time Doris and her brothers Ayden and Roger ran the Thomas Grocery until 1976.
Mom was an active member in the Church of the Brethren, maintaining the congregation in the Nez-Perce church until 1969 when the church closed. She maintained her connections with her church by remaining active at Camp Wilbur Stover, a Brethren summer church camp. The camp was also the location of the family cabin that both her husband and son Daniel built and worked on over the years. Her last years were spent in the Mountain View congregation in Boise.
She lost her loving husband on Aug 25, 1996. Her son Daniel was able to move home and help take care of her and their family home for a few years. In the spring of 2002, Doris made a monumental move to southern Idaho to be with her son. It was there in Kuna, Idaho that she settled in for the last several years. She often went to seniors events and had many friends in that special group of people. She also enjoyed visiting the Oregon Coast with her son and his family. They managed to take several trips together, and experience new destinations. No trip would be complete without many detours to the ever present array of antique stores. The coastal trips were another way for her to indulge in her passion for seafood. In life she never met an antique or seafood meal she didn’t like.
