Dorothy (Dottie) Jean Horn Mckinney

Dorothy (Dottie) Jean Horn McKinney, 90, passed away peacefully on July19, 2012.

Dottie was born in Seattle, Washington, on March 19, 1922, to Florence and Albert E. Horn Junior.  Dottie started school in Los Angeles, and continued her education up and down the Pacific Coast.  Dottie attended Caltin’s School for Girl’s in Portland, Oregon, and she graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle. She attended the University of Oregon, where she belonged to Alpha Chi Omega and was active in campus activities.
Dottie was the first female on the University of Oregon Ski Team.
She met Bob McKinney in college and they were married in Portland, Oregon, on September 25, 1943.  They moved to Boise, Idaho, where Bob worked for M.K.  In March of 1944, they moved to the family cattle ranch southeast of Payette, Idaho.  While living on the ranch, their two children, Kathy and John, were born.  Dottie worked at an abstract company, and the Payette County Agent’s Office.
She helped on campaigns for the March of Dimes, the Cancer Society, the Red Cross, and the Heart Association.  In 1956, the family moved from the ranch to Payette, and in 1958, they moved to Boise, where Bob worked for Intermountain Gas Company.

While living in Boise, Dottie was the Memorial chairman for the Cancer Society, and worked for the Heart Association.  She wrote the histories for Beaux-Arts and Assistance League.  She was a charter member of the Assistance League and organizer and first president of Beaux-Arts Society.  Dottie was also a board member of the Boise Art Museum.  She was a life time member of St. Lukes Auxiliary and she sold their Christmas cards for over twenty years.  Dottie also worked at the Vista Gift Shop for four years and was a member of the Hillcrest Country Club.  Children will remember her as the “Wicked Old Witch” of Owyhee Street for many years of exciting Halloweens.   Shortly after Bob became VP of Intermountain Gas Company in 1974, he and Dottie bought a cabin in McCall where she loved boating, fishing, wild flowering, and entertaining friends and family.  Dottie was interested in photograph and was in the semi-finals for a national contest where her photo of a misty McCall morning was accepted for a coffee table book.

Dottie was preceded in death in 1985, by Bob, and earlier, by an infant daughter.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Buonaccorsi, husband Rick, of Carmel, CA; a granddaughter, Christina Ziegler, husband Aaron, of Menlo Park, CA; a son, John R. McKinney, wife, Laurel, from Spokane, Washington, and a half-brother, Skip Horn, of Seattle, WA.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise. Dottie will be buried next to her husband Bob at the Riverside Cemetery in Payette.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Beaux-Arts and Assistance League, 670 Julia Davis Dr., Boise, ID 83702, (208) 345-8330.
