Dorothy
(Dottie) Jean Horn McKinney, 90, passed away peacefully on July19, 2012.
Dottie
was born in Seattle, Washington, on March 19, 1922, to Florence and Albert E.
Horn Junior. Dottie started school in
Los Angeles, and continued her education up and down the Pacific Coast. Dottie attended Caltin’s School for Girl’s in
Portland, Oregon, and she graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle. She
attended the University of Oregon, where she belonged to Alpha Chi Omega and
was active in campus activities.
Dottie
was the first female on the University of Oregon Ski Team.
She met Bob McKinney in college and they were married in
Portland, Oregon, on September 25, 1943.
They moved to Boise, Idaho, where Bob worked for M.K. In March of 1944, they moved to the family
cattle ranch southeast of Payette, Idaho.
While living on the ranch, their two children, Kathy and John, were
born. Dottie worked at an abstract
company, and the Payette County Agent’s Office.
She
helped on campaigns for the March of Dimes, the Cancer Society, the Red Cross,
and the Heart Association. In 1956, the
family moved from the ranch to Payette, and in 1958, they moved to Boise, where
Bob worked for Intermountain Gas Company.
While living in Boise, Dottie was the Memorial
chairman for the Cancer Society, and worked for the Heart Association. She wrote the histories for Beaux-Arts and
Assistance League. She was a charter
member of the Assistance League and organizer and first president of Beaux-Arts
Society. Dottie was also a board member
of the Boise Art Museum. She was a life
time member of St. Lukes Auxiliary and she sold their Christmas cards for over
twenty years. Dottie also worked at the
Vista Gift Shop for four years and was a member of the Hillcrest Country
Club. Children will remember her as the
“Wicked Old Witch” of Owyhee Street for many years of exciting Halloweens. Shortly after Bob became VP of Intermountain
Gas Company in 1974, he and Dottie bought a cabin in McCall where she loved
boating, fishing, wild flowering, and entertaining friends and family. Dottie was interested in photograph and was
in the semi-finals for a national contest where her photo of a misty McCall
morning was accepted for a coffee table book.
Dottie was preceded in death in 1985, by Bob, and
earlier, by an infant daughter.
Survivors
include a daughter, Kathy Buonaccorsi, husband Rick, of Carmel, CA; a
granddaughter, Christina Ziegler, husband Aaron, of Menlo Park, CA; a son, John
R. McKinney, wife, Laurel, from Spokane, Washington, and a half-brother, Skip
Horn, of Seattle, WA.
A
memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at
Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise. Dottie will be buried
next to her husband Bob at the Riverside Cemetery in Payette.
