Duane Risdon Lind
Born:   6-8-1921
Died: 11-21-2011

Duane Lind was born in Grand Island, Neb;  the son of Andrew and Wauneta (Conger) Lind. He loved to play sports and had fond memories of his times on his grandparents’ farm.  During the depression, his family moved to Tacoma and then to Seattle.  He graduated from Ballard High School and worked for Boeing.  When WWII started he enlisted in the Army and became a member of the elite 10 th Mountain Division Ski Troops.  Duane saw active duty in the Aleutians and Italy and was proud of stories when he was able to assist in saving people’s lives.  After the war, Duane remained in contact with his fellow soldiers for the remainder of his life and was always proud to be a veteran of the 10 th Mountain Division for his entire life.   On his 90 th birthday he received personal well-wishes from the Acting Brigadier General at Fort Drum.   The 90 th birthday celebration was a great success and brought family members together from all over the United States.

Upon returning home, Duane enrolled at the University of Washington, where he received his BA in Sociology.  It was here that he met the great love of his life, Harriet Lundberg.  He was so proud of his wife and treasured her until she passed away from cancer in 2002.  Harriet and Duane had four children:  Susan, Rick, Robin and Patti.  Duane worked for Mountain Bell for 30 years as a respected Yellow Page Manager.   Duane lived primarily in the Boise Valley, but the family was transferred temporarily to Bountiful, Utah for a period of six years. He and Harriet were important leaders with the Boise Valley Pointing Dog Club, the Scandinavian Society, Crane Creek Country Club and the First United Methodist Church.  Later in life, he became an accomplished artist in the Rosemaling tradition of Scandinavian painting.

Besides his love for his wife and children, golf was his other passion.   He taught his entire family to golf and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to continue to go out on the golf course with his children, grandchildren and friends.  He was an avid bird hunter and raised English Setters that competed successfully throughout the west.  In his last days, he shared that his favorite dog was “Genie.”   He will be remembered as a man who was intelligent, passionate about ideas, tremendously creative, a devoted husband, and loving and proud father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Duane made many lifelong friends over the course of his long life.  After his beloved wife, Harriet, passed away,  Duane and his family especially appreciated the love and support from close friends and caregivers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet, his eldest daughter, Susan Harriet Lind Greenthal, his sister, Francine Bell, his brother, Clayton Lind, and his parents, Wauneta and Andrew Lind.

He is survived by his children:  Rick Lind of Yakima, Washington(and wife, Kathy and their children, Jennifer (her husband, Walt Jordan and daughters Alice and Juniper) and Brian;  Robin Lind of New Castle Pennsylvania (and her husband, Ralph Peters); and Patti Lind of Portland, Oregon (and her children, Anne, David, and Maren Toledo). He is also survived by his sister, Karin Scheuch from Missoula, Montana; his sister-in-law and her husband of Roseville, California, Anne-Marie and John Pearson, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
