Edna Schultz passed away Saturday April 14, 2012 at a local
care facility.
She was born at home August 20, 1919 to Rosa and Henry
Barker on the family farm on Mann Creek, several miles from Weiser Idaho.
In 1920 her parents sold their Mann Creek farm and purchased
a farm near Fruit-land. Edna helped with
household chores but was drawn to work in the orchards with her father and two
brothers. She attended Fruitland schools,
graduating from Fruitland High School in 1937.
In 1938 Edna moved to Boise, attending Boise Business
College and the Buss Grimm School of Business. Following business school she
was hired as the first secretary of the Boise Police Dept. where she worked
until 1941.
In 1941 she went to work in the transportation unit at Gowen
Field assigned to manage troop deployment. She transferred to Mountain Home Air
Base when it opened to help set up the transportation office.
As World War II drew to a close Edna moved to the Boise
office of Union Pacific Railroad where she was working when she married Joe
Schultz in June 1944. They met during
his Air Force flight training at Gowen Field and wed when Joe returned from the
Pacific theater. They moved to Lake
Charles, Louisiana where Joe was stationed and Edna went to work for M. W.
Kellogg Construction Company.
They moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1946 and in July of 1947
she gave birth to son Richard. The next
year Edna and Joe moved to Idaho, in search of life in the country instead of
that in the big city.
With her return to Idaho, Edna began her gardening
activities. She became a long-time active member of the Golden Garden Club, the
Chrysanthemum Club, and the Rose Society. Her interest and expertise lead her
to become a flower show competitor and a judge. She held many offices in flower clubs over the
decades, was devoted to development of the Julia Davis Rose Garden, and judged
flower shows throughout the Northwest. She
was active for more than 30 years in the flower department at the Idaho State
Fair in all capacities including as assistant superintendent and
superintendent.
In keeping with Edna’s wishes, no services will be held. She
asked that her friends remember her when they next admire a blooming rose or
chrysanthemum. Contributions in Edna
Schultz’s name can be made to the ‘Julia Davis Memorial Rose Fund’: % Darlene
Hoffland, Idaho Rose Society, 6520 Ustick, Boise ID 83704.
