Emilie Frances Gatton (née White), was born to Dewey
and Frances White, on July 5, 1923, in Scranton,
Pennsylvania. She was the first of three
children, followed by her sister Irene and her brother Leon.
After high school she met a handsome young man named Fred
Gatton at an Army ball days before he was to ship out. They spent the next several years writing
letters to each other as Fred served in Europe and Africa during World War II.
Emilie married Fred Gatton, on March 29, 1945, about two weeks after he came
home.
Within the next few years they had three sons, Leon, Fred
Jr., and John. Being a mom kept her busy
and she especially enjoyed the early years with the boys. Later, Emilie went to cosmetology school and
became a hairdresser. She did this for many years.
In 1984 the Gattons moved to Boise. After her children were grown and Fred had
retired they adopted their two granddaughters, Emilie and Janice. For the girls’ early years she was a
homemaker. As they entered school Emilie would volunteer in the classrooms, the
office – anywhere they would let her as she liked to be very involved.
She then began volunteering at Teen Challenge, a ministry
that helps youth, adults, and families with drug and alcohol problems become
productive members of society. She did
this for over a decade and finally retired in 2005.
Emilie enjoyed life, laughter, and people. Some of her
favorite things were worshipping the Lord, reading, painting, and playing
cards.
Emilie joined her parents, husband, siblings, and oldest
child on September 2, 2013.
