Fairy L. Bowen died June 3rd, 2011 at Life Care Center at Valley View. She was born at home in Nampa, Idaho on May 22, 1923, the daughter of Harrison Benjamin and Ethel Viola Giese. She graduated from Nampa High School in 1941. She then enrolled in the St. Luke's Nursing program from which she graduated in 1943. Shortly thereafter she married David Q. Bowen, then a lieutenant in the Army Air Corp stationed at Gowen Field. After David's return from North Africa the family moved to Provo, where David finished his degree at BYU. They then moved to Nampa, where they operated a small grocery store for a short period of time before moving to Boise in 1948.

In 1948 Fairy was persuaded to begin training as an x-ray technician, a program which she completed. She worked as a registered nurse and a registered x-ray technician at all the hospitals and for various orthopedic surgeons in Boise until the late 1970s, most notably Dr. Richard Gardner.

Fairy in her younger years was active in the Madrigal and at St. Michael's, where she was a member of the choir. Later in life she was active in the Women's Club and various bridge clubs. Fairy enjoyed skiing at Bogus Basin, boating at Lucky Peak, recreating at her cabin on the middle fork of the Payette River and dancing at the New Years Eve parties out at the Gowen Field Officers Club. Fairy tended injured football players from Boise Junior College and later Boise State University and enjoyed the football games for many years.

Fairy is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Keith, her sister Shirley, her sister Ruth, a daughter Dena Rae and her husband David. She is survived by her daughter Samantha Barrie, her son R. Daniel Bowen and his wife Laura, a granddaughter Elizabeth Barrie and a grandson John Barrie. Fairy is also survived by four lovely great-grandchildren, Ethan Barrie, Madison Barrie, Chloe Barrie and Ian Barrie.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Dorothea Kunert Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund at Boise State University, % Boise State Foundation, 1910 University Dr., Boise, ID 83725-1030.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Cathedral with Canon Lucas Grubbs officiating. A private committal service will follow at Morris Hill Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.
