Carmichael, Calif. — Father William D. Dohman, "Father
Bill", 80, retired pastor from Sts. Peter and Paul in Grangeville and St.
Mary’s in Genesee, died Nov. 11, 2013 at his home in Carmichael, CA.
Born Jan. 4, 1933 in Langdon, N.D., he was the son of Albert
and Catherine Frances (Schmidt) Dohman. Growing up in North Dakota and
California he became a member of the Crosier Brotherhood in Onemia, MN. It was there where he received training to be
a brother in the Catholic Church. He
attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles; St. John Seminary in
Camarillo, Calif.; and Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Ore. He was
ordained June 2, 1973, in Our Lady of Victory Church in Compton by Bishop Juan
Arzube, an auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles.
In the Diocese of Boise, he served as associate pastor at
St. Mark’s in Boise (1973-74), and St. Edward’s in Twin Falls (1974-75); as
pastor at St. Mary’s in Genesee (1975-77), St. Matthew’s in Eagle (1977-79) and
Sts. Peter and Paul in Grangeville along with St. Jerome’s in Riggins
(1993-98); and as administrator (1980-83) at Our Lady Queen of Angels in
Horseshoe Bend and St. Jude’s in Garden Valley.
Among his other service was as vice officialis (1980-81) and
officialis (1981-83)
in the diocesan Tribunal and as
spiritual director for the Legion of Mary (1995-98).
Everywhere Father Bill went he continued his education. He had a Bachelor of Arts in English and
Philosophy from Immaculate Heart College.
He also received a Master's degree in Library Science from Immaculate
Heart College. He received a Master's Psychology from the University of Idaho,
in Moscow, ID; a Masters in Counseling from the College of Idaho in Caldwell,
Id, and a Masters/JD from Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.
He retired from active ministry July 1, 1998, subsequently
moving to California. He was a lifetime
member of the Knights of Columbus, and volunteered wherever he was needed. He
served as a volunteer counselor in homeless shelters, a legion of Mary advisor,
and often visited the sick.
He had many special interests including books, movies, music
and his two pets, Willy III and Miss Cat II.
He also enjoyed shopping.
He is survived by three brothers, Robert of East Grand
Forks, MN, Herman of Seal Beach, CA, and Gary of Hemet, CA.; two sisters, Karen
Burtchaell of Bakersfield, CA and Bonita Gholson of Boise, ID; several nieces,
nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, older sister,
Delores, younger sister, Marie, and older brother, Donald.

A funeral mass was held at St. John’s Cathedral on Thursday,
November 21, 2013. A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Langdon,
N.D. where he will be buried beside his parents.
