Frank John Dagres, 96, of Boise, passed away on
Saturday, December 21, 2013, in a local care center. Frank was born in Boise on
July 20, 1917, the oldest son of John and Anna Dagres. He attended Boise
Schools and graduated from Boise High School in 1937. Growing up, he had many
part-time jobs: at the Chinese Gardens, selling newspapers, working as a busboy
and waiter in several Boise restaurants, and working for Cooper’s Shoe Shop.
In May of 1941 he went to Seattle, WA, and joined
his brother, Nick Dagres, who was working for Boeing Aircraft. Frank worked for
Boeing for the duration of World War II. After the war he returned to Boise and
started working for Sells Shoe Store. In February of 1946 Frank and his father,
John, purchased the shoe shop and operated it for a few months before Nick
joined the partnership and the business became known as Frank’s Shoe Shop. A
few years later, in addition to the shoe repair and shine business, they added
a line of new boots and shoes.
In 1950 Frank became one of the founders of Sts.
Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. He served as the first President
of the church, and remained on the Board since its inception. In October of
that year, he married the former Helen Dudunake of Pocatello. They were blessed
with a son and two daughters.
Frank became a member of the Greek Fraternal Lodge,
the Order of AHEPA in 1948 and served as President of the local chapter and as
District Governor. He was a Life member of Boise Elks Lodge No. 310, a member
of the Masonic Lodge Capitol City #93 for over 50 years. He was a member of the
Scottish Rite and El Korah Shrine Club since 1970. He was also a member of the
Gold Rush Shrine Club in Idaho City.
In 1965, then Mayor Amyx appointed Frank as a
Commissioner on the Boise Redevelopment Agency. He served in that capacity for
two and one-half years and then served as Property Manager. He sold his share
of the shoe store to his brother Nick Dagres, but continued to be a permanent
fixture in the store. The store was one of the oldest businesses on Main Street
until it was closed following Nick’s death in October of 2004.
Survivors include his wife Helen and their children,
John of Seattle, Stacie of Boise, and Maria (Pete) of Burley, and their two
children, Pete and Hilary; his sister, Ann Ryan of Boise; and several nieces
and nephews.
A special thanks to his cousin Chris Alexander for
his companionship over many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his
brother Nick Dagres and Nick’s twin sister Cozi Dagres, his sister, Georgia
Molenaar, and his brothers-in-law Hal Ryan and Jake Molenaar.
He loved Boise and his many friends. His church
always came first with him and he remained a faithful worshipper all of his
life. He requested that memorials be made to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek
Orthodox Church, 2618 Bannock St., Boise, ID 83702.
A Trisagion Memorial Service will be held on
Thursday, December 26, at 7 p.m. at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. A Funeral
Service will be held on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Sts.
Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Morris Hill
Cemetery.
