Fred (Fritz) Olan Wagahoff made his last cast on the evening
of April 1, 2013, surrounded by loved ones in Boise. Fred was born September
30, 1926, on a farm outside of Golden City, Missouri, to Anthony Joseph and
Irma Agnes (Murphey) Wagahoff. After high school graduation, Fred and his twin
brother George enlisted in the Navy. Fred spent time in the Pacific Theatre
(Guam) during the later years of WWII, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
Fred next ventured to Eastern Idaho looking for work digging
potatoes but finding work as a laborer in road construction. Soon thereafter, he
met the love of his life and best friend for over 50 years, Elaine Brekke, in
Boise. They were married December 30, 1950, in Britton, South Dakota. Known by
most as Fritz during his 64 years in Idaho
working road construction, he formed a special bond over 5 decades with the
Larry McEntee family. He spent the last 30 years with Central Paving, Inc.,
just recently retiring in February of this year. He moved into Plantation Place on March 4,
2013.
Fritz’s pastimes included fishing, bird hunting, beer, card
playing, boating, beer, gardening and spending time sharing his “larger than
life” personality and sense of humor with friends and family. Two of his
favorite locations for sharing time with his wife, family and friends were his
deck next to Fall Creek at Anderson Reservoir and the backyard patio at their
home in Boise.
Surviving family members include his three daughters and sons
in law Cindy and Larry Stokes of Boise, Candy and Jim Dale of Boise, and Penny
and Tom Schmitthenner of Delaware, Ohio; five grandchildren, Brad and Bryan
Stokes, Lindsay Dale, and Matt and Becky Schmitthenner; twin brother George
Wagahoff of Joplin, Missouri; and various extended family members throughout
the country. Fritz also leaves behind “a
lot of good roads” in Idaho that he helped construct or repair, many more than
once.
Fritz was preceded in death by his wife and parents; two
brothers, Clarence and Gene; and two sisters, Lenore Probert and Agnes Wolfe.
Fritz’s family would like to thank Drs. Dan Zuckerman and
Stephen Miller for their support and services as tremendous advocates for their
patient. A special thank you goes out to
the professional and loving care provided by Plantation Place Assisted Living by
all their wonderful staff and residents.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.,
at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Avenue, in Boise
with graveside service immediately following at Dry Creek Cemetery and ending with
a celebratory gathering.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable donations
in Fritz’s memory to The College of Idaho, MSTI, the Idaho Food Bank or a
charity of your choice.
