Gen passed away peacefully at home in the arms of her beloved
husband John on January 28
th
.
She was 96 years old.
Gen was born February 11, 1915 in Tracy, Minnesota to Carl
and Florence Tweet. At four years of
age, after her mother’s death, she and her sister Ethel were placed in
guardianship of their Aunt Clara and Uncle Tom Jones of Brainerd, Minnesota. Her beloved Aunt and Uncle raised the two
girls to become wonderful adults and mothers.
During the summer months they lived in their cabin on Gull Lake, near
Brainerd. During winter months they
lived in Brainerd and took in school teachers as boarders. These ladies were very instrumental in giving
Gen a good upbringing and a great education.
Some fond memories of her childhood were sledding and following the ice
truck down the alley. She played the
violin and the bugle.
After graduating from High School, where she was a class
officer and in the National Honor Society, she graduated from the University Of
Minnesota School Of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. During her third year of college, she fondly
remembers looking through the university address book for a familiar name to
invite to an upcoming dance. She noticed
John Dahl, who she vaguely remembered from high school and invited him -- he
accepted. Unfortunately, she came down
with the mumps and had to cancel the date.
Thank goodness John called later to ask her to go to a movie. The rest is history.
Gen and John were married on June 15, 1940 at the cabin on Gull
Lake. They lived for a short while in
Minneapolis, where she pursued her nursing career and John worked as a
CPA. Thereafter, the Second World War
changed their lives dramatically. After
John entered the Army, they moved several times before settling in San
Francisco for the last three years of the War.
In 1946, they moved to Caldwell, Idaho where John took a job with the
Simplot Company. In 1948, they moved to
Boise where they have lived ever since.
Gen’s family life was filled with constant adventure with
four children, dogs, cats, white rats, guinea pigs, baseball, dances, skiing,
Brownies, Scouts—to name a few-- and
lots of neighborhood children whom she loved dearly. There were always cookies, soda pop and
bandages available. She was also a
wonderful supporter of her husband’s career.
Gen was very involved with volunteer work such as the PTA,
First Congregational Church, Red Cross Blood Drives, St Alphonsus Hospital and
the Elk’s Rehabilitation Hospital. She
was recognized for 25 years of volunteer service by the Elk’s Rehabilitation
Hospital.
Gen and John were very fortunate to have travelled to many
parts of the world including the Pacific Rim and Asian countries, Europe, the
Middle East and the Caribbean Islands.
Her favorite location was the Mediterranean.
For over fifty years, Gen had Monday coffee with her
neighborhood friends. She also very much
enjoyed regular luncheons with the “Go Go” girls (volunteer group) of the
Elk’s.
When asked what her secret was to a great marriage, Gen said
“compromise”. There must have been a lot
of compromise in her marriage as it lasted 71 years.
All that knew her thought of her as loving, caring, soft
spoken and very patient.
Genevieve is survived by her husband John, their children
Jack Dahl and his wife Kathy, of Boise, Catherine Entsminger and her husband
Arlen, of South Carolina, Helen Timothy and her husband Alan, of Colorado, and
Richard Dahl and his wife Barbara, of Hawaii.
In addition, she is survived by eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Gen had the remarkable ability to treat each
grandchild, and great-grandchild, as an individual, giving each a special form
of attention, love and encouragement.
The grandchildren and great-grandchildren are: John Dahl, wife Eizelle
and children Ava, Emma, Mia and Nina of Hong Kong; Jenny Dahl and children Ali
and Jacqueline of Sacramento; Matt Dahl, wife Stephanie and children Jake,
Maddi and Charlie of Boise; Stacy Dahl of Boise; Allison Entsminger of Beijing;
Lindsay Entsminger of New York; Matt Timothy Washington DC; Jason Timothy, wife
Natalie and child Brady of Plano, TX; Steven Dahl of Santa Barbara; Sarah
McKeown, husband Morgan and children Coby, Charlotte and James of Singapore;
and Jane Dahl of Seattle.
The family would like to give special thanks to the four
ladies who provided care and comfort to our Mother. They are; Mary Murach, Lyn Runyon, Casey Wahl
and Sue Kranz. We also wish to thank Dr.
Mike Maier and Staff for many, many years of wonderful medical attention.
No funeral service is planned at this time. The family will have a private
gathering. In lieu of flowers, the
family suggests a contribution to the Elk’s Rehabilitation Hospital in Boise or
to a charity of your choice.
