George
B. Pfoertner, M.D., 79, died at home on February 24, 2014. He was the oldest of
5 children born to Alfred and Ardel Pfoertner on June 13, 1934, in Des Moines,
Iowa. He spent his early life in Buffalo, NY., attended Blessed Trinity School,
Canisius High School, Canisius College and the University of Buffalo School of
Medicine. George graduated in 1960 and joined the U.S. Army. He drove across
the country to his first assignment at Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah where his
love of the West began. His next assignments took him to Albuquerque, New
Mexico and Denver, Colorado over a 10 year active duty military career. From
June 1967 to June 1968 he was Director of Medical Services at the 24th
Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, Vietnam. George left the Army in 1971 and
chose Boise to build a 30 year medical practice, specializing in Internal
Medicine, Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at St. Alphonsus Medical
Center; he was also a Nursing Home Medical Director for several nursing homes
over the years. George retired from his office and hospital practice on January
1, 2000 but continued his nursing home practice until 2004. He retired in 1983
from 12 years in the Idaho National Guard with the rank of Colonel. George was an expert skier and fly fisherman and
an avid reader. He enjoyed biking, Rugby, flying his Cessna and other small
planes, loved his Idaho lifestyle and had friends from every walk of life.
George and Janell Perkins were married in 1989. They spent many wonderful years
at Sun Valley, fly fishing at Silver Creek, skiing on Baldy. George skied and
fished many other mountains and streams in the West. He taught his son, George,
to ski, fly fish and play Rugby at a young age.
George was preceded in death by his
mother and father. He is survived by his wife Janell and beloved dogs Fonzi,
Tashi and Buddy; son George B. Pfoertner, Jr. and wife Sally, grandchildren Eva
Pfoertner and Karl Pfoertner; sisters Marilyn Gentry and Nancy Starr, brothers
Alfred Pfoertner and Paul Pfoertner, numerous nieces and nephews; and
sister-in-law Janette Perkins.
The family thanks Dr. Norman Zuckerman,
his nurse Gina, Dustin Bowman, P.A., Cheryl Mills, Nurse Practitioner, nurses
and volunteers of the chemotherapy suite at MSTI for their care, and our friend
Diane Commons who was with us when George died. Thank you, Mark. You always met
George at the MSTI reception desk with a personal greeting and a brief
conversation. George always said, "I hope Mark is there today".
A viewing will be held at Alden-Waggoner
Funeral Home on March 6, 2014 from 5-7 PM. A military honors burial service is
planned for March 7, 2014 at 11 AM at the Veterans Cemetery on Old Horseshoe
Bend Road, followed by a Celebration of Life in the fellowship hall at The
Cathedral of The Rockies from 1-3:30 PM. Friends and family are welcome to
share memories of the remarkable life and times of George B. Pfoertner, M.D.
