Our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Georgene
Elizabeth Miller Smith passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014, of
natural causes.
The only child of Bertha Bland Miller and George Phillip
Miller, Jeanne was born on May 24, 1924, in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a
child, she and her cousins spent many wonderful days on the Bland family farm
in southern Indiana. Her love of animals, which was nurtured on the farm,
remained an important part of her life. As a mother she welcomed pets of
every variety, and doted on her and the family’s animal companions.
Jeanne was an alumna of the University of Indiana. While
attending college, she met Franklin Breneman Smith III of Boise, who was
training for World War II duty in Indianapolis. Their love affair
continued despite Franklin’s relocation and on March 16, 1946, they were
married. After living in Indianapolis for several years, they (and
Jeanne’s parents) moved to Boise, which was their home for over 60 years, until
Franklin’s passing in 2009.
Jeanne led a lively, happy and productive life while raising her
three children. She enjoyed entertaining in her Highlands home, and playing
bridge with her many friends. She was a charter member of Crane Creek Country
Club. Always supportive of her children, Mother served as Cub Scout leader,
Brownie leader and PTA President. Jeanne especially delighted in her seven
grandchildren. She was active in each of their childhoods and will be forever
remembered and adored by them. She was a long time member of
First United Presbyterian Church, officer for Presbyterian Women's
Association, Session Elder, Bible Study and Sunday School
teacher. Mom was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority
and PEO sisterhood of Chapters AT and BK, holding various
offices including President. She was a member of the St. Lukes
Auxiliary, President of Philharmonic Auxiliary, served on the board
of the Boise Philharmonic and volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
She and Frank especially enjoyed attending many Jazz and musical events
throughout their lives. In her later years, especially following
Franklin's passing, Jeanne adopted a quieter way of life; but she never lost
her gracious manners, her open welcoming heart, or her droll sense of humor.
In addition to her husband, Frank, Mother was preceded in death
by her parents; brother-in-law, Richard B. Smith, and sister-in-law, June W.
Smith; and many dear friends. She is survived by her children Cindy Smith
Mosier (Terry), Brent Smith (Stephanie) and Cheryl Smith Runyan
(Kip); grandchildren Heather Mosier Nally, Melissa Mosier, Jennifer
Mosier Amonette (Eric); Cliff Green (Lorah); Nate Runyan (Kimi), Chris
Runyan (Kat) and Joe Runyan (Alicia.) She is also survived by eleven
great-grandchildren; as well as by her nephews and niece, Geoffrey B. Smith,
Shelley Smith Eichmann (David) and Mark R Smith.
The family especially appreciates the care Mother received from
the staff of St. Lukes Hospital and the Good Samaritan in her final days;
and to the Morningstar Senior Living of Boise where she resided. Special
thanks are owed to her caregiver, Carol Wickham, who was a kind and loving
friend for these last four years.
A private family memorial service will be held at the Idaho
Veterans Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
made to June W. Smith Gamma Phi Beta (U of I) Scholarship Fund, Idaho
Humane Society, Meals on Wheels or to a charity of your choice.
