Gernot (Gernie) Iwersen, 82, of Eagle, passed away on Sunday,
October 6, 2013.
Gernie was born to Valdimar and Kristjana (Soebeck) Iwersen, in
Bellingham, WA
.
and was raised on an acreage in Marietta, WA
.
Growing
up, he loved his horses and fishing, and helping his family at the cannery in
Point Roberts, WA. Gernie dropped out of high school yet
l
ater
returned at the age of 39 completing classes at night while working for Howard
S. Wright construction in Seattle. As a construction worker
,
he was
proud of his work on the Space Needle.
Gernie met his wife, Sherry, in Seattle and was married in 1962
,
sharing
numerous adventures for 52 years
.
They
lived near Woodland Park and enjoyed boating on the Sound
.
Gernie
then felt the call to ministry and began his life as a pastor, moving to Nampa,
ID, and enrolling at Northwest Nazarene College, completing his degree with
honors.
Gernie was a minister in the Church of the Nazarene since 1965.
His first pastorate was in Council, Idaho where he led the congregation for
five years
.
He then moved to Filer for another five years and then to Boise
where he pastored the Euclid Avenue Church of the Nazarene congregations for
twenty-four years. He loved helping, serving, and caring for people and has a
reputation throughout the region for his compassions and involvement in the
lives of others.
Gernie was a man of many talents, playing the accordion, oil
painting
,
and spending time outdoors. His favorite place was the family
cabin on the Weiser River, where he built an A-frame cabin that became a
favorite place of the grandchildren.
Gernie is survived by his wife; sister; four children (three
sons and a daughter); eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. He will
be greatly missed by his family and his numerous friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday,
October 19, 2013 at the Euclid Community Church of the Nazarene
