Glenn Thomas Toy,
92, of Boise, died Saturday, July 27, 2013 in a Boise hospital.
Glenn was born July
1, 1921 to Ralph and Martha (Anderson) Toy in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He attended school in a one room school house
for the duration of his school years and graduated from Chippewa Falls Senior
High School in 1939. He worked various
jobs to support the family until July of 1942, when he enlisted in the
Army. Glenn served honorably as a 2
nd
Lieutenant in the 12
th
Armored Division, 66
th
Armored
Infantry Battalion and the 7
th
Army during WWII. Even after the war was over, he spent nearly
a year aiding in the post-war clean up in Germany.
When Glenn returned
to the US, he took advantage of the GI Bill and enrolled in the engineering
program at the University of Wisconsin.
While in college, Glenn met Dorothy Tingvold, who he married September
21, 1947. He was able to secure a job
with the Bureau of Reclamation after his graduation in 1950, and was
immediately sent westward to Washington.
He eventually was able to land a position with Morrison Knudsen, for
whom he worked proudly for 35 years.
During that time, he lived in Seattle and then Boise, and had the opportunity
to travel all over the world working on MK projects.
The hardships brought
upon his family during the Great Depression as well as his service in WWII
defined Glenn’s life. He took pride in
his country and worked extremely hard to support his wife and three children,
and was thus able to truly live out the American Dream. He took life in a serious manner, but he very
much enjoyed golf, fishing, boating, biking, visiting with his family and
friends, and attending Hellcat (WWII) reunions.
He was an incredibly generous man of sharp intelligence and great
integrity.
Glenn is preceded in
death by his parents, son, Bradley, wife, Dorothy, and brother, Jack. He is survived by his children, Linda Toy
(Pat Covey) of Sequim, WA and Richard Toy (Kayla) of Boise, ID; sister, Jean Todahl of Eleva, WI, and
sister-in-law, Joey Toy of Fargo, ND;
granddaughters, Andrea, Lindsay, and Kelsey, and his
great-granddaughter, Jinaya; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be
held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 8, 2013 at the Idaho State Veterans
Cemetery under the direction of the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel.
