Gloria J. Osgood, 93, of Boise, died at home, surrounded by
her family, on January 15, 2012. She was
born on September 12, 1918, in Burley to parents Harrison B. Powers and Jessie
Jolley Powers. Gloria was proud of being
an Idaho native and of her pioneer heritage.
Gloria was a voracious reader with a life long interest in
politics. She was interviewed and
recorded for an oral history project, “Boise By Heart.” She loved antiques, good chocolate, and
babies; above all she loved her husband, Raymond. She was intelligent, independent, and
opinionated.
Stricken with polio as a child, Gloria recovered to live a
full and active life. She graduated from
Boise High School in 1936, and from Boise Business College two years
later. She worked at Idaho Hardware,
leaving to marry and become a full time house wife and mother.
Gloria married Raymond J. Osgood on September 12, 1939. They settled in Boise in a tiny house that
Ray remodeled and enlarged after coming home from World War II. Except for a short stay in Nampa, Gloria
lived in that same house all her adult life.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and
Jessie Powers, and her husband Ray, by her brother and sister in law, Bob and
Bernice Powers, and by her sister and brother in law, Colleen and Jerry
Kendall. An infant grandson, Richard,
also preceded her.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeannine Nichols and Diane
Broom, and her son David Osgood and daughter in law, Sharon Osgood. Six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren,
four nieces and a nephew also survive her, as do several faithful friends.
The family wishes to thank Legacy Hospice, Havenwood
Caregivers, and Assisting Hands Caregivers for making it possible for Gloria to
live and die with dignity in her own home.
Services are planned through Alden Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Friends and family may visit the Chapel on
Thursday, January 19, from 5 till 8 o’clock.
Music at 6:30. Graveside services
are set for 10:30 AM on Friday, January 20, at Morris Hill Cemetery. Reverend Mike Black of Wright Community
Congregational Church will officiate.
The family suggests living memorials. Please remember Gloria by contributing to the
charity of your choice.
