Gordon Gochnour passed away on May 26, 2013, leaving an empty
place in the hearts of family and many friends. Gordy was born to Blair and
Gladys Gochnour in Burley,
ID
.
He
developed a love of sports and participated
i
n high school and The
College of Idaho, playing football, basketball, baseball, and track. Gordy
received the outstanding Athlete award when he graduated from The College of
Idaho in 1962
.
As an educator he taught and coached
i
n the
Middleton
,
Vallivue, and Caldwell school d
i
stricts.
He joined The C of I health and physical education staff in 1967 and served as
head track coach and assistant football coach. It was there that Gordy
developed some life
-
long friends
.
In 1971 he spent 2 yrs
.
at Boise
State as Intramural director
,
assistant professor of physical
education, and golf coach. But Gordy's heart was at The C of I, so he returned
in 1973 as head track coach and assistant football coach, in addition to some
teaching duties
.
In 1975 Gordy packed up his family and moved to Las Vegas
,
NV. He
spent one year as the State Prevention Coordinator for the Bureau of Alcohol
and Drug Abuse. He then joined the new Clark County Community College as the
physical education, recreation, and sports coordinator. As the college grew,
Gordy developed and strengthened those programs, until the College President
realized what a treasure Gordy was, so he appointed him Assistant to the
President for the rest of his 30 year tenure.
As busy as he was, Gordy always found time for golf. He did love
that game!
Gordy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn (Hopper)
Gochnour, sons Kent (Shannon), Wade (Lorraine), sisters Lois Spreier and Elsie
Mumbach, and four grandchildren, Cashele, Ava, Adam and William.
In memory of Gordy, donations may be made to any of the
Parkinsons Disease Foundations.
