Helen Yelton

Helen Yelton

Helen was born July 19, 1924 in Rupert, Idaho to Wilburn and Mary Long.  Graduating Rupert High School in 1942, she attended many of the All School Reunions.  Helen married Jerry Yelton in the fall of 1942.  Most of her working life, Helen was a bookkeeper, accountant and office manager.  She retired from Higgins and Rutledge Insurance.  Helen and Jerry enjoyed camping, road trips, water & snow skiing, and went on several cruises.  Helen was a lifelong learner and had a zest for enjoying life and making friends.  She enjoyed gardening, Scrabble, knitting and crocheting.

After losing her vision to macular degeneration in 2003, Helen continued reading through the Idaho Talking Book Library for the Blind.   She read over 5000 talking books and enthusiastically promoted the program to all she met who could benefit.  Needing to keep her hands busy while reading, she crocheted several hundred multicolored kitty blankets.  Some of her blankets went to the Idaho Humane Society but most went to Simply Cats, a no kill cat shelter in Boise, where she had adopted her beloved cat, Tiggy, in 2002.

August 2015 Helen moved into an independent living apartment at The Terraces of Boise where she had a very active social life and made many new friends.

After a brief hospitalization, Helen died at a local hospital in Boise on April 5, 2018.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 5 sisters and 3 brothers.  She is survived by her daughter, her youngest brother, 2 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

At her request, cremation was under the direction of Alden Waggoner Funeral Chapel.  Friends and family will celebrate Helen’s life June 3, 2018, 3 pm to 5 pm, in The Bistro, The Terraces of Boise, 5301 East Warm Springs Avenue, Boise, Idaho 83716.
