Howard M. Schafer, 92, passed away peacefully at his home on September 29, 2016. Howard was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up with a great appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and sportsman in his younger years. One of his first jobs was with a yacht company, where he developed and honed his woodworking skills. In Baltimore, Howard met the love of his life and his future bride, Evelynne. He grew up loving her and pursued her until the day they were married. Their love story is one of which most people only dream.
Soon after high school, Howard enlisted in the US Army to join the Allied troops in WWII. He fought valiantly as an infantryman, serving most proudly on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge. He served a 22-year career in the US Army and retired as Chief Warrant Officer 3. Howard then had a second career as a quality engineer with AT&T and retired after another 20-some years. Howard was recognized for his great work ethic, having never missed a day of work during his entire career. His careers took him and his family to various locations around the country--Texas, North Carolina, Montana, and Missouri--before he and Evelynne finally retired in Idaho.
Howard was a loving husband and father. Nothing meant more to him than the well-being of his family. Though he had a military-ingrained tough exterior, he was a man of great compassion and a true gentleman. He demonstrated a very sacrificial love and went to great lengths to take care of his family. He was known to work tirelessly to remodel and maintain their homes in pristine condition. Howard could fix anything.
He will be greatly missed, but his family is comforted knowing that he is with his Savior Jesus Christ and once again with his lovely wife Evelynne, who proceeded him in death. He was also proceeded in death by his brother Lewis Schafer and his sister Marian Crawford. He is survived by his sons William Wills and David Schafer of Somerset, KY, and by his daughter, Bonnie Spencer of Boise, ID. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren—Jacki (Rob), Austin, and Holly Matheny of Burlington, KY; Amber (TJ) Hathaway, MyKenzie Caldwell, and Aden Futrell of Mountain Home, ID; Jessica (Avi) and Maya Leah Ohad of Cincinnati, OH; Benjamin Spencer of Boise, ID; and Samantha (Dustyn) Skogsberg of Nampa, ID.
A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise, ID.
