Mr. Hung-Chi Lam
left us peacefully while asleep at home in the early morning hours on November
14, 2014. He was born in Taishan, China, on June 11, 1927. Hung-Chi worked as a
teacher in his hometown upon completion of his own education, eventually
becoming an elementary and secondary school principal. In 1949, he married
So-Yiu Lui who was also a teacher and together they began to build a family
with five children.
Because of a
desire to seek more freedom and a better future for his family, Hung-Chi moved
to Hong Kong in 1958 with his two oldest sons. By 1965, the whole family was
reunited in HK. Over the years Hung-Chi had various jobs and business ventures
but he was most successful in his restaurant and hotel management roles. His
visionary thinking, generosity and caring nature made him a well- loved and
respected boss, business partner and friend to many. Despite his success in HK
and China, Hung-Chi recognized that America was the ultimate land of
opportunities for his children. He planned for them to obtain employment and
financed their higher education in the US. In 1983, Mr. and Mrs. Lam immigrated
to the US and established their permanent home in Boise, Idaho.
Hung-Chi
maintained the love for his hometown and its people after moving to the US. He
went back to Taishan for visits at least once or twice every year. He advised,
contributed and helped raise money to build schools and improve the
infrastructure there, earning the appreciation and respect from the local
people and officials.
One of Hung-Chi’s
hobbies and talents was Chinese calligraphy. His strokes were strong and the
words appear amazingly neat and straight, aptly reflecting his character. He
also enjoyed Karaoke, and Cantonese opera was his specialty. He continued to
perform and sing in front of appreciating audiences well into his late
seventies.
Hung-Chi’s
passing was preceded by his beloved wife of 60 years, So-Yiu, in 2009. They
were survived by their many offspring: Son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Konnie
Lam, Son and daughter-in-law James and Barbara Lam,
