Born on March 17, 1928 at the Edwards family residence
in Iowa, Ida Carolyn Edwards Lovin departed from this earth on October 29, 2014. Ida passed away as a consequence of multiple
illnesses which she battled courageously for the last four and a half years.
Ida, the fifth of six children, (May, Robert, Merle,
Ruth, Ida, Alan), of Burton and Etta Uken Edwards resided in her
childhood/adolescent years at the family farm near Buffalo Center, Iowa. For eight years, Ida attended a nearby
country elementary school to and from which she daily walked two miles each
way. Afterwards, she attended and
graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1945, and in 1950, graduated with
a B.A. degree from Buena Vista College, now Buena Vista University, at Storm
Lake, Iowa. She later earned a B.S.
degree in mathematics at Boise State College (no Boise State University).
Ida's lengthy career as an educator included service
in Iowa rural elementary schools, different town elementary schools in Iowa,
elementary schools in Alaska and at Seattle, Washington, and sever years as a
substitute teacher in the Boise City public schools.
On June 3, 1956, Ida married Hugh Lovin (a fourth
generation Idahoan whom she had met at Kodiak, Alaska) at the Congregational
Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa. The
couple resided in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and Nebraska until settling
permanently at Boise in 1965. This
marriage lasted until Ida's "death do us part" from her ever-loving
spouse.
Although no longer a paid educator starting in the 1980's,
Ida's love for small children prompted her to do volunteer work for many years
at a Boise elementary school in both the classroom and the library. And, after 1992, Ida traveled widely with her
husband (including a memorable visit to Australia and eight different sojourns
in Europe). Aside from working with
children, traveling, and her activities at the Wright Congregational Church,
all of which Ida especially enjoyed until illnesses beset her, Ida liked gourmet
cooking at which she excelled, sewing, rug-making, and reading fiction and
non-fiction. For many years, she
participated in a book club at Boise.
Left
to mourn Ida's passing are her husband, Hugh of Boise, a son, Jeffrey Lovin,
M.D.; three grandchildren; Kristen Elizabeth Lovin J.D., Erika Marie Lovin, and
Benjamin Daniel Lovin; a brother, Alan Edwards (Ida's only surviving sibling)
of Mason City, Iowa; and many in-laws and nieces and nephews in Iowa and
Minnesota. The family thanks Ida's
physicians and the fine people at Four Rivers Hospice for their devoted and
loving care of Ida for such a long time, and her many friends and faculty wives
from Boise State University.
