Irene was born March 12, 1916 in Halfway, Oregon to Jack and Grace Allstead. In 1920 she went to live with Jen and Burley Locke. They raised her until she enrolled at NNC in 1933 graduating from Normal School in 1935. She later received her education degree from College of Idaho.
Irene married J Russell Brown on August 25, 1935. They were married for 65 years and their children are Bob and Molly. J Russell was a Pastor and Evangelist in the Nazarene Church. She was a loving support for her husband and served the Lord faithfully in so many capacities. She was a gifted pianist and organist and used her talents to play in church, for weddings, funerals, choirs, musicals, accompanying singing groups, soloists and many musicians. Their early years of marriage found them pastoring in Idaho and Oklahoma.
Irene started her teaching career in Emmett, Idaho in 1955. She taught in the Meridian School district from 1962-1981. After retiring from teaching she enjoyed traveling to Europe, the United States, spending time at her summer cabin in McCall and her winter home in Yuma, Arizona.
Irene was an avid Boise State football fan and listened to every game on the radio.
She was a faithful and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She will be missed especially by her family which include Robert (Bob) Brown of Boise, his sons, Bobby and Rusty in Germany, Dennis and Molly Pooley of Boise, their sons and wives, Brian and Dawn Pooley, Boise and Duane and Lorissa Pooley Klamath Falls, Oregon. Her cherished great-grandchildren are Kalauni, Drew, Taylor, Tanner, Alaina, Trevor and Jayden.
The family thanks the staff at Applewood Assisted Living for lovingly taking care of Irene the last year of her life.
Her service will be held at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM. It will be officiated by her grandson, Pastor Duane Pooley. A private burial service will be held at Cloverdale Cemetery.
