Jim was born in Vale, Oregon in 1929 and moved to Idaho
shortly after. He grew up in the
mountains of Dry Buck, Banks where his father and uncle opened the first gas
station in Banks. He attended school in
Brownlee and Sweet. He was the second to
the youngest of eight siblings, 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
He grew up with a passion for hunting, fishing and the
land. In his younger years he worked on
many ranches and was a uke skinner for Morrison-Knudson from 1946 to 1948 at
which time he joined the Army and served in Japan and Korea until 1952. At that time he married Carol Stewart and
from that union they had four children.
They divorced in 1969. Later he
married Betty Ellis and at this point two families became one with a total of
14 children. He was logging, doing
everything from working the sawmills to operating equipment. In 1959 he went to work for the Forest
Service and was there 27 years until his retirement. Family was very important to him as evident
by the large and ever growing crowds for picnics, campouts and Christmas as his
house overflowed. He was never without a
fishing or hunting partner as he taught the next generation his life
skills. He played as hard as he
worked. He bravely fought cancer for
over 20 years and kept his pride and dignity till the Lord called him home.
