Janice Nystrom Brown James, age 89 of Boise Idaho, died Tuesday March 22nd at her apartment in Valley View of causes related to age.

Jan was born on March 29th, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Daughter of Joseph Oscar and Frances Cordelia Sloan Nystrom. She was raised and educated in Salt Lake City graduating from East High in 1938.

She then continued her studies in language at the University of Utah for two years. Being fluent in German, French and Latin, her intentions were to teach language. While reading a book on nursing, she decided she wanted to study in the medical field. She headed for San Francisco, graduating from Children's Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1943. She received an award in Pediatrics.

She married Lt. Robert B. Brown in Fort Meyers, Florida on July 12th, 1943. Robert was a Pilot and was killed in action in a mid air crash while flying a P51 Fighter over Fallaise, France on June 19th, 1944.

Jan then married William Kenneth James on April 30th, 1946 in Elko, Nevada. The couple moved to Boise, Idaho. Ken passed away on January 11th, 1994.

For awhile Jan remained active in nursing but eventually let go of the field to raise her family. She remained very active in her sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma and is a past president of the Boise Alumnae of KKG. Past President of the Boise Newcomer's Club. An honorary life member of P.T.A. She bowled in the Panhellenic League for 25 years and was a Precinct Registrar for 34 years.

Jan loved to play bridge and played in several marathons and bridge clubs in the Boise Valley. She also loved to prepare food, and will be remembered for her culinary skills and generosity in inviting people to her home. She loved to read. She had a remarkable ability to remember birth dates, not just her family and closest friends, but everyone she encountered. Jan loved animals, and was well known for feeding stray cats, most of her life.

In addition to her two husbands, Janice is preceded in death by her Son: Rick B. Brown, a step Son: K. Robert James and a step-Daughter: Joyce J. Hood.

She is survived by a Son, Mark W. James of Salem, Oregon, Two Daughter-In-Laws, Linda M. James of Salem and Patricia Brown-Spencer of Salt Lake City, Utah. Three Grandchildren, Ben Brown, Rawleigh Brown and Tiffany Link, all of Boise, 11 Step Grandchildren, a Cousin Ginny Farrell of Boise, along with her cat “Butterball.”

A viewing will take place on Monday, March 28th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.. A celebration of Jan’s life will be held on her birthday, Tuesday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m., at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise, Idaho. Services will conclude at the chapel. A private interment will take place at Dry Creek Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Idaho Humane Society, 4775 Dorman, Boise, ID 83705, or a charity of your choice.
