Jo was born on
April 18, 1950 in Twin Falls, Idaho to Joan and Dean Blakeslee. She
graduated from Mountain Home High School, studied at Concordia and received her
Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from Idaho State
University. She later graduated from the University of
Washington Medical School. She and Amy Linkert died in September of
this year at Craters of the Moon National Monument.
Jo believed in
hard work, academic rigor, science and keeping the faith. She spent time in the
desert lands of eastern Idaho studying wild horses, taught science and math in
Idaho and ventured to faraway corners of the globe to study and provide medical
care. Always, her goal was to improve the health and education of
others. More than 30 years ago, Jo and another family member served a medical
mission in Cameroon. In preparation for that mission, they studied in France
along with another young missionary, Amelia Linkert, who became a dear friend
to our family. After returning to the United States from Africa, Jo
served in the Naval Reserves as an officer, retiring as a Commander.
Her medical
career included private practice in Washington and Idaho and she was an
Assistant Clinical Professor in Washington and California. She was
Chief of Staff at Group Health and left Seattle to return to Boise where she
worked privately before joining the medical facility at the Snake River
Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon.
Jo was a member
of the Wright Community Congregational United Church of Christ and previously
served as Moderator and in other capacities in that fellowship. She
loved Idaho State University and served on the Alumni Board and was the 2006
President’s Medallion recipient.
Jo is survived by
Robert and Mary Pond and family, Lorraine Blakeslee and family, Bill and Mary
Jeanne Elliott and family, John Elliott, the family of Ward Blakeslee, Winifred
Stedman and family, and Dr. Virginia Scholl. Jo’s parents,
grandparents John and Alice Elliott and Lois and Ward Blakeslee, and an uncle,
Ward Blakeslee, passed before her.
A Memorial
Service for Jo Elliott-Blakeslee and Amelia Linkert will be held on Friday,
November 8, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Rockies, 717 North 11th
Street in Boise, Idaho.
Our family is
grateful to the searchers, volunteers and many friends, known and unknown, who
assisted in finding Jo and Amy – thank you. In lieu of flowers, the
family respectfully requests donations to the Wright Congregational United
Church of Christ, 4821 Franklin Road, Boise, Idaho 83705
