John Presley Rehberg

John Rehberg sadly passed away on Friday, May 31, at 7AM.  He was born on February 25, 1942 to Donald and Helen Rehberg and grew up in the town of Crystal Lake, IL.

While installing lockers with his father at Immanuel Lutheran School in Crystal Lake, IL, John met the love of his life.  One glance was enough to convince him that this teacher belonged in his life.  He and Eula soon began dating and were married on August 26, 1967.  They were enthusiastic supporters of the Marriage Encounter program, both to strengthen their own union and to encourage newlyweds in their fresh relationship.

He shared many stories of his time in the US Army from 1963 to 1966, mostly spent at a military base in Germany.  He was very proud of his service to his country and his work with nuclear weapons storage in the European theater.  One of his favorite stories was when he got to say no to a General since John had a higher clearance level.

John enjoyed working with his hands.  He worked diligently for over forty years as a carpenter to provide for his growing family.  In addition to his full-time job, he added on a complete home renovation and expansion as the family grew beyond their original space.  Later, he cherished his time with his son Ron as the family renovated and expanded Ron's first house in Woodstock.  He finished his long career by working for Schaefer Builders in Crystal Lake, IL.  He provided free advertising for the company until his last days by frequently wearing their branded shirts, sweatshirts, ballcaps, winter hats, and winter coats.

As a lifelong gardener, John loved working outdoors.  Whether it was a variety of flowers (roses, tulips, gladiolas) or fresh vegetables, he would spend countless hours weeding, watering, and tending the garden to share with those he loved.

John lived a life of service to his church, family, and community.  He served on multiple church boards and was president of the local branch of AAL for many years.  John and Eula joyfully sang in many choirs together, including a wonderful tour of Germany with the Immanuel choir and the Boar's Head Festival at Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo.

His children and grandchildren were an immense source of pride for John.  He would happily share the latest news with complete strangers.  The memory of his fondness for chocolate, sci-fi, and card games will always bring a smile to those who loved him.

John has left behind his wife Eula; children Ron, Victor, Joelle (Holmquist), Dan, and Arthur; son-in-law Matt Holmquist; daughters-in-law Anita and Ellen; grandchildren Greg and Nick, and Audrey and Tim (Holmquist), sister Martha (Pinnow), and many nephews and nieces.  He is predeceased by his sister, Mary (Stoerp).

He is with our Father in heaven and we are confident we will see him again.  It was John’s wish to postpone any memorial services until he is joined by his beloved wife.
