Joseph Aland Smith, our beloved, husband, father,
grandfather, brother, uncle and friend went to be with the Lord on May 15
th
,
2017. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded
by family, at the age of 87.
Joe was born in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, to Collis and Verda
(Aland) Smith, March 26, 1930. As a
youth he enjoyed basketball, and skiing.
He attended Jr. High and High School in Caldwell, Idaho, where he met
his partner for life, Joanne Goul in the 8
th
Grade. They were married August 11, 1950. Joe also served in the Navy during the Korean
War. He attended the College of Idaho
where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Following his graduation at the C of I he
then attended Harvard University where he earned his MBA. Joe worked for TRW, in Los Angeles, and also
for about 1 year in the Washington D.C. area, from about 1957 to 1968. He then moved his family to St. Louis,
Missouri, where he eventually became the Chairmen of the Board and CEO of Bank
Building & Equipment Corporation.
Joe retired and moved back “home” to Idaho in 1985. In Idaho his “retirement” didn’t last long as
he pursued his love of working with his children in developing a variety of
family businesses and investing in real estate in the Treasure Valley. He especially enjoyed the family ownership
and management of Builders Masonry Products, Meridian, Idaho, from 1987 –
2000. The company produced all of the
concrete masonry block for the Boise Towne Square Mall, and much of the
surrounding commercial developments during that growth era for the Treasure
Valley.
Last August Joe celebrated 66 years of marriage with his
high school/college sweetheart, Joanne.
They did a fair amount of traveling in their later years including
cruise trips to Alaska and the Mediterranean, and to a vacation home in San
Diego; but they especially enjoyed their
cabin on the lake in McCall, Idaho. Joe
loved spending time with his children and grandchildren enjoying recreational
activities on the lake and out on the golf course. His quick dry wit, gentle spirit and
generosity enriched the lives of all those who knew him, and he always put his
family first.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children Mark
(Felita), Eric (Cindi), and Stephanie (Kevin), all of Boise, Idaho;
grandchildren Sara, Daniel, Britany, Matthew, Jacob, Peter, Alexa and Brian;
and great grandchildren Zane, Alek, Zach, Clayton, Olivia, Adelaide, and
Claire; and his sister, LoRee of Boise.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dene; and a
grandson, Robert.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, May 22
nd
,
at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, 5400 Fairview Ave., Boise. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be
made to the local Salvation Army.
