Josephine Miner, age 101, died Friday, April 5 at Grace
Assisted Living in Meridian.
Jo was born on Aug 19, 1911 in Wichita, Kansas, the second
of seven children born to Ada and Joseph Warren. Jo grew up in a lively, loving family and had
many wonderful memories of her childhood and young adult years. The Warrens
were extremely musical, and Jo was an excellent piano player and had a lovely
soprano voice. In the days before
television, Jo and her family spent much of their time singing and harmonizing
with each other. Jo always remained
close to her siblings and all of their children. Many nieces and nephews spent summers with
their Aunt Jo and their Idaho cousins, making wonderful memories that are
cherished to this day.
Upon graduation from high school in 1930, Jo planned to go
east to attend Wellesley College. However,
because of the Depression, the cost was just too great, so Jo stayed home and
attended and graduated from Wichita State University in 1934. This proved to be a good twist of fate, for it
was here that Jo met the love of her life, Charlie Miner. If ever the old saying “Opposites attract”
was true, Jo and Charlie were living examples, with Charlie being boisterous and
outgoing, and Jo ladylike and demure.
They wed on April 15, 1936 and were married almost 66 years when Charlie
died in 2002. They had two daughters, Barbara and Becky.
Charlie and Jo left Kansas in 1949, and after a 2 year stop
in New Mexico, came to Idaho because of a business opportunity for
Charlie. Mom hated to leave her family
and home in Wichita, but where Charlie went, she went. Boise was soon considered home and Jo grew to
love it, even though she always missed Kansas.
Home, family, and friends were always the mos
t important
things in Jo’s life.
Like many women of her
generation, her work was making a lovely home for her family.
Jo loved to entertain, and her parties were
famous.
The Christmas Eve party was a
very special event and anyone lucky enough to be included has great memories of
Jo accompanying Charlie on the piano as he sang “Oh Holy Night.”
Jo was an avid reader, sang in many choirs and musical
groups, and enjoyed traveling with Charlie in their retirement years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and a
volunteer for St. Alphonsus Auxiliary for many years. Jo was only blessed with one grandchild, so
she became “Grandma Jo” to many children of friends and relatives. Everybody needed a grandma like Jo!
Jo was pre deceased by all of her siblings and her husband,
Charlie. She is survived by her two
daughters, Barbara (Floyd) of Bozeman, Montana and Becky Kelly of Boise, one grandson,
Patraic Kelly of Boise, brother and
sisters in law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at Sacred Heart Church,
811 S. Latah, Boise, on Wednesday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation arrangements are under the
direction of Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Condolences can be sent to Jo’s
daughter Becky at
