Laura Skillin Coleman of Boise, Idaho, was born July 4, 1914, near Frankfort, Kansas, and died July 17, 2011. She was the daughter of Nora Ward Skillin and Isaac Skillin. Laura graduated from the secondary school in Frankfort, later receiving her B.S. degree in Physical Education from Kansas State University. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta social sorority and active in 4-H and sports. Laura was one of 10 students (the first without a nursing degree) in the United States accepted by Walter Reed Army Hospital for physical therapy training in 1938. She served three years at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. and at Fort Riley, Kansas. Laura retired from the Elk’s Rehabilitation Hospital. She was honored by the Army in 1989 at San Antonio, Texas for 50 years of professional membership. Laura married her college sweetheart, F. Monroe Coleman. He was a statistician in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Monroe died in July, 1999. Their four children are Susan Coleman Johnson (Tom), Marvin Lynn Coleman (Cindy) both of Boise, Rev. Ward Monroe Coleman (Joan) of Plano, Texas, and Cathleen Coleman Bayer (Eric) of Barrington, Illinois. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
