Leonard Horace Ground
of Boise died October 3, 2012 at the age of 91 from natural causes. Born on
September 30, 1921 in Wheatland, Dallas Co., Texas, to Julius Randall Ground
and Elizabeth L. Counts, he was one of nine children. Leonard will be
remembered as a wonderful husband and as a loving father, grandfather, and
friend.
Leonard is survived by
his wife of 17 years – Mary Ground of Boise, ID; a sister Wanell Ekemo of
Seattle, WA; many nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren. Leonard was preceded in death by his son, Allen, his parents,
and seven siblings.
Leonard served in the
US Army as a Ranger Paratrooper Master Sergeant during WWII. He often spoke of
his jumps and his times in the Rhine River region of Germany. He enjoyed
working with the folks at ACE Hardware in Boise & Emmett Idaho. His hobbies
included woodworking and, as a member of the Warhawk Air Museum in Nampa,
Idaho, he enjoyed having conversations about his time of service. He was also
an active member of the Senior Center in Meridian.
A funeral service will
be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in
Boise. Burial will follow at 3:00 pm at Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise.
