Margaret Smyser
1922 - 2015
93 years ago, on January 29, 1922, Margaret Smyser was
born at St. Luke's Hospital in downtown Boise.
As a child, she attended Boise schools until she was a high school
sophomore, when her family moved to Great Neck, New York (on Long Island).
Graduating from Great Neck High School at the age of 16, Margaret returned to
Idaho to attend the College of Idaho, which had been founded by her
grandfather, the Rev. William Judson Boone.
In college, Margaret met Doiel Smyser. Their college
courtship was interrupted when Doiel subsequently enlisted in the Navy at the
beginning of WWII, and was commissioned as an ensign. Conditioned upon
Margaret's promise to her parents that she would complete her college
education, Margaret and Doiel married on January 1, 1943. When Doiel deployed
to the South Pacific, Margaret moved in with her parents. Following the war,
Margaret and Doiel lived in New York City for 12 years where Doiel worked for
R. H. Macey's. All four of their children were born in New York.
In 1954, the family moved to Kalispell, Montana, where
Doiel sold real estate and insurance, and did appraisals. Margaret stayed busy
raising her four children who all graduated from high school in Kalispell. With
their youngest child in college, Margaret and Doiel returned in 1973 to Boise.
In Boise, Margaret did volunteer work at St. Luke's
Hospital, the Assistance League and other community activities. Ark Club was a
strong focus in Margaret and Doiel's life, and the club members were amongst
their closest friends.
Margaret had four children. Her oldest, Jim (Jane
Smyser), graduated from the College of Idaho, served in Vietnam and returned
from the Army as a colonel in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps, and lives in
Richmond, Virginia. Her daughter, Sally (Dan Moore), graduated from Whitworth
College and lives in Bellingham, Washington. Her daughter, Jeanne (Sheldon
Barker), graduated from Boise State and lives in Boise. Her son, Howard,
graduated from the University of Montana and is a retired judge living in
Boise. Margaret has seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
