Martha Mary Wilcox Allen, 94, died March 2, 2012, in
a local assisted living home.
A memorial service will be held on , at , at Eagle
United Methodist Church, Eagle, Idaho. Private burial will be at Dry Creek
Cemetery, Boise. Burial arrangements are under the direction of Alden-Waggoner
Funeral Chapel, Boise.
Mrs. Allen was born March 26, 1917 in Boise. She was
the only child of L.B. and Margery D. (Durell) Wilcox. She lived many years of
her life in the Pierce Park area, attending Pierce Park School, finishing her
grade school years in Boise Schools. She graduated from Boise High School in
1935, Boise Junior College in 1937, and Northwest Nazarene College in 1939.
Her teaching career was in Primary Grades (1-4), and
First Grade in Ada County Schools and one year in a Boise School.
After receiving a degree in Library Science from the
University of Denver, She was Children’s Librarian at the Caldwell Public
Library 1956-1960, and then worked at the Boise Public Library for a time before
becoming Children’s Librarian there.
She played violin with the Boise Philharmonic
Orchestra in the early years of its existence.
On Dec. 27, 1970, in Boise, she was married to G.
Harold Allen.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Pierce Park Grange #282,
receiving her 50 year pin and Pomona certificate in 1982, also belonging to Ada
County Grange #1, holding offices in both granges. She was a member of the
Idaho State Grange and The National Grange.
She especially enjoyed the years she was a pianist
for Pierce Park and Pomona Granges. She also played for some State Grange
sessions.
She was a member of Pierce Park-Collister
Presbyterian Church and then on Oct. 14, 1973 joined Eagle United Methodist
Church, where she served as pianist and on Church Committees.
Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her parents, her
husband, Harold, and brother-in-law Orville. She is survived by sister-in-law,
Eleanor Allen, of Meridian, and various nieces and nephews. She felt so
privileged to have had a very loving family, including her cousins and many
caring, understanding friends.
