Mary A. Bates, 87, Nampa, went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2011. Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 15, at 3:00 p.m. at Morris Hill Cemetery, Section K, in Boise.
Mary Arrilla, “Marya”, was born May 1, 1924 in Nampa to T and Kathryn (Kate) Snyder Westbrook , joining older brother Lew. Her father died when she was 11. She graduated from Boise High School in 1942 and attended Boise Junior College. She loved to sing and play the organ and sang at many events around the valley.
She married Earl Hill on Dec. 1, 1946 and moved to the family dairy farm south of Meridian. Son Martin (Marti) was born in 1952 and daughter Sallee (Suney) joined the family in 1963.
After Mary and Earl were divorced, Mary worked for the Ada County Fairboard, the Fourth Judicial District Court, State Supreme Court, and Dept. of Water Resources in Twin Falls. She retired in June 1986.
She married David E. Bates on October 11, 1986. They lived in Nampa and loved traveling to Arizona to visit Mary’s daughter and granddaughter Koty. She loved summers when Koty came to Idaho and she could watch her 3 granddaughters play together. David died in 1997.
Mary was a 63-year member of P.E.O., and currently a member of Chapter N, Nampa. She was also a 57-year member of Daughters of the Nile and a 61-year member of the Meridian Chapter #66 Order of Eastern Star. She greatly enjoyed her organizations and also enjoyed painting ceramics, traveling, reading, and having lunch with friends.
She is survived by her family of friends, too numerous to mention, who were her constant support and companions. She is also survived by her son, Marti Hill and partner Dixie Cook, Meridian, daughter Suney Hill, Phoenix, AZ, granddaughters Stacy Walgamott and her fiancé, Dale Johnston of Caldwell, Kimberly Hill of Salt Lake, and Takota (Koty) Ashcraft of Long Beach, CA. She was blessed by her great-grandson Grady K. Walgamott, Caldwell. She is also survived by sons- and daughters-in-love Les and Barb Jensen, Nampa, and Mike Ashcraft and Joanne Leavett, Laveen, AZ., and sister-in-law Ruth, nephew T, and nieces Patricia and Peggy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a stillborn brother in 1918, brother Lew E. Westbrook, and husband David.
