Mary J. Stevens Campbell
Born June 18, 1916 in Troy, Idaho, Mary passed away on May 31, 2014 at age 97 in Richland, Washington. She was a long-time resident of Boise, Idaho.
Mary grew up on a wheat farm near Deary, Idaho. Her grandparents August and Emma (Nelson) Anderson emigrated from Sweden and homesteaded near Troy in Idaho Territory in 1886. At 13 Mary gave her heart to Jesus and knowing and loving Him made all the difference in her life. Mary graduated from Deary High School at age 16. After graduating from the University of Idaho, class of 1938, she taught Home Economics for three years in northern Idaho. She then married her college sweetheart, Clayton J. Campbell on June 10, 1941. He had joined the Army Air Corp and with the start of WWII six months later, was soon off to fight for his country and served in China for over a year. Mary saved his paychecks and also gave birth to their first child, C. John Campbell, Jr. After the war, Clayton used the money Mary saved to personally design and build their home which they moved into debt-free in December 1951.
Mary
and Clayton raised their five children while also raising a big garden to feed
them. Mary read to her children and made their clothes. She passed on her Home
Economics training to her two daughters along with several other girls through
the 4-H program. She then taught sewing classes at the YWCA for many years
before becoming a health department Home Economist. Mary was an active member
of Boise's First Presbyterian Church serving as an adult Sunday school teacher,
president of the women's organization, and as an elder. She was also an active
member of the Boise Home Economics Association, the Scandinavian Society, an
Extension Homemaker Club, and was a Saint Alphonsus Hospital volunteer.
Mary
will be remembered for her selfless devotion and generosity to family, friends,
and neighbors. Her favorite activities included sewing, gardening, making
bread, teaching, traveling, and playing games with family and friends.
Her
surviving children are C. John Campbell, Jr. (Pauline) in Aberdeen, WA, Marjory
Clements (Jim) in Hope, ID, and Beth Carothers (Kelly) in Richland, WA.
She also leaves a daughter-in-law, Ann Campbell
in Richland, WA, ten grandchildren: Tonja (Ian) Campbell, Clayton (Jennifer)
Campbell, Charlotte Clements Hoover (Clint), Troy Clements (Krissa), Ann
Carothers Gerlach (Phil), David Carothers (Penny), Mark Carothers (Jill), John
T. Campbell, Neil Campbell, and Maribeth Campbell. She leaves nine
great-grandchildren: Juniper, Grant, Theron, Ella, Margaret, Clara, Mary Grace,
Quinn, and Spencer as well as nieces and nephews.
Preceding
her in death are her husband of 61 years, Clayton J. Campbell, Sr., parents
Densmore and Dora (Anderson) Stevens, her sister Mildred Stevens Mace, her
brother Glen Stevens, her sons Douglas D. Campbell and Gregory D. Campbell, and
a great granddaughter Audrey O. Campbell.
A
memorial service officiated by Pastor Andrew Kukla will be held at First
Presbyterian Church, 950 West State Street, Boise, Idaho, at 11:30 a.m. on
Saturday June 14, 2014 preceded by a burial service at Dry Creek Cemetery in
Boise at 10:00 a.m.
In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the donor's
favorite charity.
